Awards season under way; new Jayhawks album set; Kid Rock hates scalpers

Not that it ever entirely goes away, but what is generally considered "Awards Season" in the movie business started last night with the Gotham Film Awards, at which "Winter's Bone" won the top prize.

Earlier in the day, however, came the much more interesting news about the hosts of the upcoming Academy Awards telecast: the somewhat surprising choices of James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Reacting to the news, New York magazine speculates on what we're likely to see from the pair, while the Kansas City Star looks back at some memorable Oscar hosts.

EW.com went to the trouble of preparing a complete awards season calendar, taking us all the way up to the Oscars on Feb. 27.

STAGE

• Following the troubled first preview of the Broadway "Spider-Man" musical, the Wall Street Journal takes a look at the show's potential future. Meanwhile, the show's composers — Bono and the Edge from U2 — are happy with the music, MTV.com reports.

MUSIC

• This ought to generate some interest in certain quarters: The members of the classic lineup of the Jayhawks are working on a new album, Rolling Stone reports.

• The Detroit News has a good roundup of the new holiday-themed albums available this year.

Kid Rock is really mad at ticket scalpers.

• A TV movie filmed entirely at a house in Ada will premiere next month, the Detroit Free Press reports.

• Bing's list of the top people searches for the year leads off with Kim Kardashian.

• Italian moviemaker Mario Monicelli reportedly died after leaping out a hospital window.

Johnny Depp says Disney wasn't happy with his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.

• The Associated Press reports that the Discovery Channel is getting into comic books.

RADIO

• When "Dr. Laura" starts her new show on satellite radio, racism is among the topics she plans to address. Hoo, boy ...
