The weather for this year's Taste of Ann Arbor couldn't have been better — mostly sunny, with temperatures in hovering around 70 degrees — and Ann Arborites came out in droves to enjoy the flavors and sounds of the annual event.

Some of these Ann Arborites had come to Main Street with strollers, wagons and dogs in tow. Some of them were still in their running gear, with Dexter-Ann Arbor Run medals around their necks.

And some, festooned with bright red ribbons, were gathered to sample a taste at every one of the 41 participating restaurant booths and award accolades for best appetizer, best entree, best dessert, overall best in show, and a special "people's choice award."

Among the judges at the year's Taste of Ann Arbor were Ann Arbor Mayor John Hieftje, Ann Arbor Convention & Visitors Bureau President Mary Kerr, The Ann Arbor Chronicle's Mary Morgan, and yours truly. Main Street Area Association, the organizer of the event, also solicited a guest judge via the organization's Facebook page.

The results:

Best dessert: Panna cotta with rhubarb sorbet and caramel mousse with pea tendrils at Vellum.

Best appetizer: Ecuadorian Humitas (fresh corn cakes with lemongrass-tomato stew) from Lena.

Best entree: Fish tacos from The Black Pearl.

The People's Choice Award: Frita Batidos

Best of Show: Arbor Brewing Co.

Congratulations to the winners. How was The People's Choice Award winner determined?

Thanks, Jessica. Apart from the single general public, guest voter/judge, how does The People's Choice Award differ from Best of Show? Or is there no difference apart from the solicited guest judge whose vote tilted the results from ABC to Frita Batidos?

The Main Street Area Association solicited a guest judge from the general public via Facebook. Their vote, combined with input from the other judges, determined the winner in the People's Choice category. As for the service, I thought the staff manning the Frita Batidos booth were really positive and pleasant.
