The Week in Beer: Eat, drink, drink, drink, and be merry

Some of you may be wondering why your Week in Beer is a day late. Some of you have probably already hit the hooch at the company party a little too hard and not even noticed. Whatever the case, your humble correspondent for local beer hasn't forgotten you.

There are just a few items of note this time around, so press ahead for your weekly shot of beer and brewing doings.

Saturday, December 19 It’s not strictly an Ann Arbor/Washtenaw event and it doesn’t necessarily involve the best beer (and possibly not any beer at all, depending on your drinking preferences), but nevertheless I feel duty-bound to mention that tonight is Detroit Santarchy night! Catch the Santa bus leaving from the 8 Ball Saloon, 208 S. First, at 6:30pm. Read all the details in my previous article.

Tuesday, December 22 From 3-7pm at Ypsilanti's Corner Brewery, 720 Norris, the Winter Farmers' Market rolls on inside the brewery. Come out for an extended happy hour and to celebrate fresh, local food. Call Growing Hope at 734-786-8401 if you are interested in being a volunteer or vendor.

Wednesday, December 23 Did you miss Arbor Brewing’s big Holiday Sale on the 16th? Not to fret, the Santas at the brewery have decided to do it again! All day, gift items (including clothing, glassware, mug club memberships, gift sets, gift cards, and carry-out beer) will be discounted anywhere from 10% to 50%. Plus while you shop, you can enjoy happy hour prices on beer. Beer is definitely a great gift for the man (or woman) who has everything—because you can never have enough beer.

Notes on the Napkin

  • Short’s Brewing is releasing 8—count ‘em, 8—new bottled beers over the holiday season, including Cup A Joe Coffee Cream Stout, The Liberator Double IPA, and Uber Goober Peanut Oatmeal Stout. The good and thorough folks at KalamaBrew have the rundown on all 8 beers as well as a list of places to find them. (Ann Arbor: Busch’s, Hiller’s, Main Street Party Store, Morgan & York, Plum Market, Super Liquor IV, The Arena, Whole Foods Market, and Zingerman’s Roadhouse.)
  • Two homebrewing state representatives (Doug Geiss and Deb Kennedy) have introduced a bill to give government’s magical blessing to the practice of homebrewers’ clubs meeting and sharing samples of their efforts at their local brewpub or microbrewery. My insider scoop suggests this bill should enjoy substantial support and, if passed, would also receive Jenny’s autograph. Read the entirety of the sausage-making here.

That’s your brews fit to pint for the festive week leading up to Christmas. Go thou and be beery merry!
