Local band Orpheum Bell seeks online support to record their third album

By Jennifer Eberbach

Ann Arbor-based country and world folk band Orpheum Bell has a little less than 30 days to raise $4,000 for their third album, “The Old Sisters’ Home.” Earlier this week, they launched a fundraising campaign on kickstarter, which will be active until the early morning of Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Aaron Klein (vocals, banjo, ukuleles, guitar), the band’s primary songwriter, describes Orpheum Bell’s sound on their Kickstarter video message: “First of all, we play all original music drawn from folk, music, early country music, eastern european folk music - like Balkan music, Jewish music, Ukrainian music, and just Slavic music in general,” he says. Their influences are varied and vast, and all of these different traditions come together to produce the band’s totally original sound. “We all come at it from different backgrounds and ones that aren’t necessarily coming from either side of the ocean but are maybe meeting somewhere in the middle or slightly off-center. That’s where our originality is rooted,” Klein says.

Under the way Kickstarter campaigns work, the band will only get the money if people pledge every cent of the $4,000 goal. The band has gifts for supporters who pledge different amounts to the campaign. For example, a pledge of $150 or more gets you an Orpheum tubular bell tuned to your favorite note, which band member Michael Billmire (xylophone, glockenspiel, accordion, trumpet, trombone, shepherd harp, mandolin, suitcase pump organ) is custom making, as well as other goodies like a T-shirt, guitar picks, a hand-printed poster, and a free copy of “The Old Sisters’ Home” album. For a pledge of $1,200, Orpheum Bell will come play a show in your living room, if you live within 200 miles of Ann Arbor.

The new album features a different lineup of musicians from their previous album, “Pearls,” released in 2009. “It’s like a new band, in a way,” Klein says. However, as always, band members are multi-talented and multi-instrumental, playing a lot of different old-timey acoustic instruments. Along with Klein and Billmire, Serge Van der Voo (double bass, foot percussion) is a returning band member. They are joined by new band members Katie Lee (singer, banjo, ukulele, saw, autoharp, violin), and Henrik Karapetyan (violin, fiddle). The album also features guest appearances by fellow southeast Michigan musicians Jennie Knaggs, Michael Shimmin, and Terry Kimura.

To support Orpheum Bell’s new album, pledge donations to their kickstarter webpage until September 21st at precisely 8:36 a.m. EST. Find out more about the band on their website, http://orpheumbell.com.

Orpheum Bell plays The Ark at 8 p.m. Sept. 2. The band also plans a CD release concert on Dec. 10 at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater. They will be joined by Kalamazoo-based folk and Americana duo Red Tail Ring.

actually, the Red Sea Pedestrians are playing with them, not Red Tail Ring. Please correct this, the RSP are awesome, and should have the correct info for their gig!
