Madonna comic book planned: Will Ann Arbor make an appearance?

A one-shot comic book on the life of pop icon Madonna is set for release next month, and it seems like Ann Arbor will make at least a cameo appearance.

Independent publisher Bluewater Productions plans to release "Female Force: Madonna" on Aug. 24. The 32-page comic continues a monthly series focusing on strong and influential women that has previously featured Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Palin and others.

Written by CW Cooke and drawn by Michael Johnson, the comic will sell for $3.99.

Although she only spent about a year and a half on campus, just before heading to New York to pursue her career, Madonna was a student in the University of Michigan's dance department. (The singer was born in Bay City and graduated from Rochester Adams High School.)

According to a press release, "This comic book will focus on her humble beginnings and the incredible events that led to her eventually becoming one of the few people in the world recognized by only their first name."

Bluewater Vice President Jason Schultz said in an email that the comic will cover her time in college.

“Our goal is to show the little-known events and influences that resulted in Madonna becoming the phenomenon she remains to this day, more than a quarter-century after she burst upon the scene. A visual medium provides perspective that is not only accessible but more relatable to the average person without losing any of the information involved,” Schultz said in a prepared statement.

The comic promises to cover Madonna's live performances, ever-changing musical tastes, her role in fashion, charity work and more.

Said Cooke in a prepared statement, "Most pop stars owe everything to this woman. It's amazing all of the things that she's done in her lifetime, and I have a feeling that this is still only the beginning."

Madonna is considered the best-selling female recording artist of all time, with a long string of massive hits, starting with the album "Madonna" and the single "Holiday" and continuing through the 2008 album "Hard Candy" (which hit No. 1) and the single "4 Minutes." She's one of three acts with local ties inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; the others are Bob Seger and the Stooges.

Just a couple of weeks after the release of the comic, former Ann Arborite Whit Hill, who was Madonna's college roommate, will release a memoir looking at her life though the lens of her time with Madonna.

Another weak attempt to introduce Ann Arbor into a non-Ann Arbor story. Anybody else remember the "Serial killer might have passed through Ann Arbor on his way from Flint to Toledo" story?

Hardly an example for our kids to emulate. If you lack talent shock people into watching you.

I heard Ann Arbor was going to make an appearance, but the city Planning Commission vetoed the drawings of the buildings Madonna visited during her stay here, as they were not properly representative of post-modern Victorian baroque architectural techniques.
