3-year-old girl who nearly drowned in Independence Lake shows slight improvements, but long-term prognosis unknown

By Amalie Nash

Authorities say a 3-year-old girl who nearly drowned in Independence Lake over the weekend has shown slight improvements, but it's still too early to determine what long-term effects she may have suffered.

The girl was rushed to the University of Michigan Medical Center in critical condition at about 7:05 p.m. Sunday after she was pulled from the water. The girl's family, visiting from France, was with relatives from Ypsilanti Township celebrating the Fourth of July holiday weekend at the lake in Webster Township.

Washtenaw County sheriff's spokesman Derrick Jackson said the latest update from the hospital indicates the girl has made slight improvements. She was still unresponsive and was not breathing on her own Tuesday.

Jackson did not release additional details, including the girl's name.

Officials don't know how long she was submerged, but believe it was five minutes at the most. Another visitor at the lake discovered the girl in shallow water, and that person and a lifeguard performed CPR.

I was there at the park with my family and friends when this happened. It was heart wrenching. It was so sad to hear the cries and prayers. It's very unfortunate that such a beautiful day for all that was there ended with a tragedy like this. Me and my family continue to pray for this little girl and her family. I am truly glad that some improvements are being made...please keep us updated on her progress.
