Ann Arbor man accused of lying about being kidnapped seeks insanity defense

By Art Aisner

An Ann Arbor man accused of lying to police about being kidnapped at gunpoint has indicated he'll seek the insanity defense at trial.

Court records show Damian Adams, 40, waived his right to a preliminary hearing in Washtenaw County District Court and said he intends to assert the insanity defense at trial late this fall.

Adams is charged with one count of false report of a felony for telling Ann Arbor police he was abducted by men from Ypsilanti at his Pear Street residence and forced to withdraw money from ATMs on May 10.

He said he was held against his will at a different apartment before escaping the following morning. Detectives investigated his story for several days and confronted Adams after determining he was not telling the truth.

Adams remains free on a personal bond pending a pre-trial hearing on Sept. 21. He
faces up to four years in prison if he is convicted.

What is this TV or something? I thought the way it works in Michigan is that they sent you to a mental facility, until you are cleared as "normal," and then you serve your prison term?
