Police recover car stolen from Chelsea driveway overnight

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The silver Toyota Camry was stolen from the driveway of a Chelsea home overnight, has been found in Detroit, police said.

Police Chief Ed Toth said the LoJack anti-theft system helped police to find the car. State Police in Detroit assisted in finding it, he said.

The stolen car is the latest in a series of recent thefts in Chelsea, according to police.

Sgt. Mark Pulford said the Camry was unlocked with the keys inside in the 200 block of Jefferson Street. It was reported missing at about 5:30 a.m. today, he said.

The vehicle was described as a silver 2007 Toyota Camry and has a California plate on the front and a Michigan plate on the back. The rear plate is a Michigan State University plate of “EB35U.”

Police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles, houses, garages and barns to help prevent theft. Pulford said the recent incidents have all occurred within about a mile of each other, and most have been crimes of opportunity.

Anyone with information is asked to call Chelsea police at 734-475-9122.

This is extremely rare for Chelsea... it's not Ypsilanti, it's not Detroit, it's not Ann Arbor. It's Chelsea... being that this area is generally a safe community many people are trusting. Probably too trusting. Cases like this give us as citizens a reason to be not so trusting. It isn't a matter of common sense at all in small communities, it's a matter of trust. Unfortunately that must change. It's pretty sad actually.

There might be a reason for leaving it out, but I think it would be helpful for others to know the general area of chelsea where this took place.

Just leave the keys in the ignition, too, how dumb is this? Keys in the car, car unlocked, may as well put a sign on the car, STEAL ME!
