Child abuse charges dismissed against Ypsilanti Township man

By Art Aisner

Washtenaw County prosecutors recently dismissed child abuse charges against an Ypsilanti Township man who was accused of fracturing his infant daughter’s ribs.

Court records show charges of first- and second-degree child abuse were dropped against Charles Wasson before a preliminary hearing in district court.

Wasson, 30, was charged in May after Washtenaw County sheriff’s investigators concluded their probe into serious injuries the 3-month-old suffered earlier in the year. According to the criminal complaint, Wasson squeezed her around the stomach, causing multiple rib fractures. Hospital staff notified authorities while they treated the infant’s injuries in the emergency room on March 10.

However, the evidence against Wasson was thin, said Joe Simon, his attorney.

“There’s no admission by my client that he did anything wrong, and it would be a very difficult burden to prove that my client caused any injury to this child,” he said.

Ultimately, prosecutors dismissed the case when a related family court matter was resolved. Further details about that case were not available.

@krc Thanks and YES if true that information SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED in this "update" Would it surprise me if this is just another stellar example of terrible reporting and hype? Not so much really.

I remember this story, I think. It's a shame this man had to wait this long for the charges to be dropped. It was brought out that this infant was unfortunately a victim of osteogenesis imperfecta, or 'brittle bone disease', and no matter how gently one handles one of these kids, broken bones almost always result. The above report should have included this information.

Chester you need proof to prosecute. Obviously there was not enough proof. The details were never made public, so maybe just maybe there was a terrible accident that can't be detected.

I am really upset over this article. I mean a 3 month old girl's ribs are broken and all of a sudden it is all ok. Noone is in jail and well there is no suspect. This small infant was abused and now what? I am curious on what this child is going to go thru before something really bad happens. My opinion is that once an abuser, always an abuser.
