Crashes reported in wake of overnight snowfall in Ann Arbor

By Cindy Heflin

Several crashes were reported on Ann Arbor-area roads Friday morning as drivers coped with an overnight snowfall.

At 8:30 a.m., police were dealing with crashes at eastbound Interstate 94 and Ann Arbor-Saline Road, southbound US-23 and Ellsworth Road, southbound US-23 near I-94, northbound US-23 and Carpenter Road near Milan, northbound US-23 and Joy Road north of Ann Arbor, southbound US-23 and Willis Road south of Ann Arbor and westbound I-94 and Baker Road near Dexter. The crash at US-23 and Ellsworth Road was blocking at least one lane of the freeway.

Washtenaw County Road Commission drivers reported for work at 4 a.m. this morning and have been plowing and salting roads since then, said Jim Harmon, director of operations.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 1 p.m. today. A winter storm warning issued earlier has been canceled. The National Weather Service predicts a storm total of 2 to 4 inches in the Ann Arbor area. Areas to the north could get up to 8 inches.

The POOREST excuse I have ever heard for missing the forecast was on channel 7 today. He said the difference in the forecast was due to the difference between snowfall and accumulation.

You know why people crash?? Because they insist on driving 85 miles per hour while hydroplaning and passing you on the right with an inch to spare while you're trying to drive a safe speed and maintain a safe distance from the drivers in front of you. I was passed on the right this morning at the Willow Run entrance to I-94 by a guy DRIVING ON THE SHOULDER. Yes, that's right. I was in the right-hand lane, entering the freeway, and he passed me on the shoulder. In freezing rain. Idiot.
