Former bouncers at The Fifth Quarter in Ann Arbor are acquitted of assault charges
Two men who had been accused of assaulting a patron while working as bouncers at The Fifth Quarter in Ann Arbor last year were acquitted of charges during a non-jury trial, 15th District Court records show.
Dominik Gumul, 29, of Ann Arbor, and Timothy Phillips, 26, of Pinckney, were acquitted last week of aggravated assault and assault and battery after the bench trial in front of Judge Christopher Easthope.
The men had been accused of assaulting Geoff Gaylor on Feb. 6, 2010, while Gaylor was at the bar with two friends. There was testimony during the trial that Gaylor was angry one of his friends was kicked out and unzipped his jacket in an apparent attempt to challenge the bouncers to a fight, said Gumul's attorney, Nader Nassif. Phillips was represented by attorney John Minock.
The bar at 210 South Fifth Avenue closed in the spring. In April, Gaylor filed a lawsuit against The Fifth Quarter, Gumul and Phillips, alleging Gaylor was severely beaten during the incident and that the bar failed to properly train employees.

Judge Easthope made the correct decisions in the cases. The City Attorney has been overreaching in his attempts to shut down a fine business establishment and these acquittals are proof that there is little merit to the allegations of improper conduct by the night club's employees and management.

Humm, I always thought "Bouncers" were to bounce people right out of the bar if they were causing a problem. Haven't heard anything lately, maybe they have trained bouncers now.

Does this mean the happy-go-lucky fun and games will soon resume at the Fifth Quarter?
