Man charged in Dream Nite Club shooting is held on $250,000 bond

By Lee Higgins

A man accused of shooting a man in the forearm Sunday morning in the parking lot next to Dream Nite Club in downtown Ann Arbor is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail on a $250,000 cash bond, jail officials said this morning.

Cornelius Wilson, 21, of Ypsilanti, is charged with felony firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon and four counts of assault with intent to murder, Ann Arbor police Det. Sgt. Brian Jatczak said. Wilson was arraigned Monday at the jail.

He is accused of firing multiple shots in the parking lot next to the club, where fights broke out about 2 a.m. after the club let out on South Fourth Avenue. A crowd of between 40 and 60 people had gathered in the lot, some of whom had been fighting inside the bar, police said. A 22-year-old Westland man was hospitalized after he suffered a gunshot wound to the forearm and was assaulted, police said.

Another man injured during the fight was treated at a hospital and released. Police also said a 23-year-old Westland man who fired multiple shots in the air was taken into custody and then released as Washtenaw County prosecutors decide whether to file criminal charges.

The shooting has prompted the city attorney's office to consider legal action against the club that formerly operated under the name Studio 4.

Earlier this month, a man cut two men in the face and a woman in the leg with a sharp object during a fight on the club's dance floor. No arrests have been made in that case.

If only we had more police on the streets patroling the inside of this place this wouldn't have happened. Oh, that's right we forgave the DDA owing the city 771K and we just gave them all the parking revenues as a city slush fund that goes unreported. Maybe we should get a group of citizens to patrol the city streets with CPL's (Concealed Pistol License) and maybe then the mayor and elected officials would wake up to getting some police on the beat.

The state can suspend or revoke your liquor license for selling to minors or other infractions. But I guess the city has to wait until someone actually gets killed to shut this place down. Way to be pro-active city, especially in light of mutiple dangerous incidents. The red flags are flapping in your face, what the hell are you waiting for? Oh wait, maybe you want to give the dwindling police department something extra to do. The city/state should begin by yanking the liquor license. Certainly the city could make it attractive for an enterprise that can opperate safely. But that would make sense.

Wasn't it just weeks ago that another rowdy crowd gathered next door to Dream Club in the 4th & William parking structure - apparently to witness a brawl and encourage participants? Now it's "next door" on the other side of the Dream Club. Regardless of what "control" Dream Club management has outside, that place apparently attracts violence prone and violence addicted types. I live in the vicinity: I've noticed a "trend" of more groups of young males walking to, from and around that "club." Whether or not the management is responsible for the incidents, the city has to get law enforcement focused on that area to deal more directly with "patrons" and loiterers. There's a liquor & beer store just around the corner, there's an alley behind the "club" and the parking structure & apparently the semi-secluded USPS parking areas: all prime spots for more trouble. 1 more thing: that location is the site of a series of failed restaurants and bars. It's not a good business location, even though it "seems so." Maybe that's what's behind this phenomenon, where "undesirables" are the only clientele available to a business. (?)

@leaguebus I agree with your post. How is a bar owner supposed to control the acts of individuals after the bar is closed???? This article has changed three times. Where did this incident occur???? As far as I'm concerened the shootting, if it did occur in the Post Office parking lot, is government propety & AAPD should be the ones held responsible.

As long as the gunplay took place in a parking lot, how much responsibility does the bar owner have over this situation? None. He should be in control inside the establishment and know when to stop serving drinks to drunks, but Controlling behavior outside is not his problem.

@roy munson: i believe there has never been a shooting inside the bar please check your facts sir and also like Mike.Epps said it was in a postal parking lot, bouncers at dream nightclub legally can not go into said parking lot, maybe the post office should actually lock the the gate that they spent pointless tax payers money on buying that they NEVER use.

The guns were not brought into the club......the shooting acured around 220 am in a parking lot that is suppose to be closed to the public, the shells were all found in the United Post Office Parking Lot the signs posted clearly say No Parking! All witnesses and victims said the shooting happend in were the cars were parked and people were illegally......true Security from the club could have controlled the situation outside more effective, but it happened in a area they have no control over.....That should have never been there!!! Why so many people were allowed to park in that area has me wondering, its goverment property AAPD shold have towed all the cars and secured the area, they closed the whole block off last week because of a Thor promotinal box found in the street beleived to be a bomb.....hmm U should work with these people Mr. Postema.....I feel the NAACP coming to town.......:)

Isn't there some way a lawsuit can be filed against the club, the owners, the managers - by local business people, perhaps?

Has anyone actually gone into this place? I would like to hear a review. Back in my day, we would just do $1 pitchers at Scorekeepers on Thursday nights and fall down the stairs and maybe watch a fight or two between dueling fratboys. There was never a fear of getting capped. What is this world coming to?

From the picture, it looks as if it may have happened in the parking structure. There isn't a parking lot next to that building, is there?

Mike.Epps: It sounds as if the shooting happened in the parking lot along William at S 4th Ave (site of the old YMCA), but AnnArbor.com isn't very clear about this so I am just guessing based on this parking lot's proximity to the club. I would rule out the post office parking lot because 1) it now has a very high gate all across 4th Ave., and 2) I doubt that ALL the people involved are athletic enough to scale the gate in order to follow the fray. Just my own musings....

Why is it that just about every time there is trouble in one of Ann Arbor's clubs the instigators are from some other city? I do not have the greatest memory but it is certainly rare to read that the problems are caused by someone with an Ann Arbor address.

"possession of a firearm by a felon" Is Mr Wilson currently being supervised by Corrections? What was/were his felony convictions for?

Otis has been changed, it only lists active offenders now. If you want to get the offender's info you will have to go to iCHAT on the Michigan web site and pay to get that info. I was hoping a news organization would at least spend the $ to check the criminal's history to include in the story but I guess not.
