Woman accused in fatal stabbing of boyfriend to undergo competency exam

The 46-year-old Ypsilanti woman accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend after an argument will be examined to see if she is competent to stand trial, according to court records.
Donna Turner had a preliminary examination adjourned Dec. 27 when Judge Elizabeth Hines ordered the evaluation.
A competency hearing was scheduled for Feb. 28.
Turner is accused of stabbing 45-year-old Keith Walton to death as he was trying to leave their apartment in Ypsilanti after an argument Dec. 4. The two had been arguing in the living room of their apartment on South Huron Street when Turner walked into the kitchen, officials said. Walton got his coat and walked past Turner just before she stabbed him once in the abdomen with a large kitchen knife, police said.
Walton died a short time later after an ambulance took him to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
Turner continues to be held at the Washtenaw County Jail without bond.

This is a sad story.I knew Donna when she was a student. The deck was always stacked against her. I doubt very much that she would ever have passed a competency exam.I am not a bleeding heart but Donna needs help not punishment

"A competency hearing was scheduled for Feb. 28" – She seemed to be 100% competent in her attack. That's the competence that counts. Just thinking: it seems wrongful emphasis might be at work in our justice system. At least in cases where there's a "crazed" person doing the killing. This is an intellectual matter - one where thinking properly and without emotion-muddling and misguided "compassion" is paramount - IF we're to have a rational system of justice. Was the weapon a knife: or a mind under the influence of emotion? Since it's the mind which chooses what action to take, what strategy to use and what weapons to use: it's just logical to decide that the MINDS of the killers ought to be put on trial. The inability/reluctance to correctly & consistently discern the threat is what causes pursuit and even dedication to THE WRONG SOLUTION. You can't defend society against cobras by banning crows.
