Man charged with murder in fatal shooting in Ypsilanti Township

By Lee Higgins

An Ypsilanti man is accused of shooting two men, one of them fatally, outside a birthday party last month on Nash Avenue in the West Willow neighborhood in Ypsilanti Township.

Darnell Javon Brown, 31, is being held without bail after being arraigned today at the Washtenaw County Jail on charges of murder, assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and felony firearm.

County sheriff's deputies say Brown fatally shot 33-year-old Marcus Tramale Jones in the head and shot a 29-year Inkster man twice in the back about 2:30 a.m. Feb. 26 in the 1300 block of Nash Avenue.

Another person, who has not been identified, then shot Brown once in the stomach, sheriff's department spokesman Sgt. Dave Archer said. The shootings occurred outside Jones' home, where the party was continuing after starting hours earlier in Romulus, deputies said. Both Jones and the Inkster man had a longstanding feud with Brown who had showed up to the party, Archer said. Archer said he did not have specifics on what the feud was about.

When Jones learned Brown was outside, he went out and confronted him, Archer said, telling him he wasn't welcome. That's when Brown pulled a handgun from his waistband and shot Jones, Archer said. Deputies say the Inkster man started to run away, but Brown shot him. Another person then opened fire and shot Brown, Archer said. Investigators are not aware of anyone other than the two shooters having weapons.

Jones was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 35 minutes after the shooting, deputies said. The Inkster man got a ride to the hospital with a friend, Archer said. Brown was being given a ride to the hospital by a friend when the car he was in crashed on I-94, deputies said. He was then taken to the hospital by ambulance, Archer said.

Detectives continue to work to identify who shot Brown, Archer said, and are hoping witnesses will come forward.

"There's people out there that know what happened, so we just need them to come forward and do the right thing," Archer said.

Brown is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on March 30.

"charges of murder, assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and felony firearm." Wait I don't see carrying and unregistered firearm in that list of charges. Since it must've been registered then, did the registry help catch this alleged criminal? If it wasn't why isn't this in with the other charges. If it's not going to be in with the other charges, what the hell good is registering firearms then? Oh yah, to keep those inclined with following the law in line...well done. Bravo
