Hockey star Ian Jenkins' final gift: life for another young man

By Juliana Keeping

Ian Jenkins, the 15-year-old hockey prospect from Ypsilanti who died in May after falling from the back of a pick-up truck, continues to “have a purpose,” his family said in an interview with Detroit television station WDIV.

“Have a purpose,” was Jenkin's motto, his father told AnnArbor.com after the tragic accident.

Living by it got him far. Before he died, Jenkins signed a contract with the Ontario Hockey League, putting him closer to his dream of playing in the National Hockey League.

The family told WDIV that Jenkins’ kidney was donated to a member of the family’s church, 24-year-old Kevin Folster of Wayne.

Jenkins died May 23 after he jumped or fell from off a truck driven by a 16-year-old friend. Washtenaw County prosecutors said today they have not made a decision about whether to file charges in the case.

My heart goes out to all -- and I agree with JohnA2 completely. May time ease the pain of the loss of the loved one for all.

WOW! more great stuff from Jenkins, I guess a part of him is still physically here and he's not totally gone. I praise this family's class of style, to give someone else life while dealing with such a tragic lose. ON THE OTHER-HAND, why is it that the cops have this kid who was driving in terror over getting charged with vehicular manslaughter? Stress Hormone Toxic exposure (SHTE) is the worst thing on a young brain. SHAME ON THE LAW for making this child so stressed out. Just drop it will ya. I'm sure he has paid dearly by the lose of his dear friend and really don't need a spanking as well. Do it or get off the pot. Quit hanging it over his head. Thats pure torture to the brain. This has gone past trying to make a decision, and I say just drop it and go on to bigger and better fish to fry, I'm sure the law agencies have better things to do than to torture a child like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How insensitive of you to claim this young man was a "fallen" hockey star...he was anything but. He had a bright future in hockey...my his family and friend's pain of his loss ease with time.

We have revised the headline. "Fallen" was intended to reference that he has died, but we realize that it can be misconstrued. Thanks for reading.

Do you not know what "Fallen" means??? U.S. troops fighting in Afghanistan paused Monday to remember the fallen in Memorial Day services
