Hearings delayed for 3 charged in connection with Superior Township homicide

By Art Aisner

The preliminary hearings for three people charged in connection with the shooting death of a Superior Township man in January were postponed last week.

LaShawn Covington, Larry Hunter, and Marget Pittman are expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing Friday, Feb. 19.

All three waived their rights to have the hearing within 14 days of their arrests during a brief appearance last week in Washtenaw County District Court, records indicated.

Each surrendered to authorities after police named them as persons of interest in the Jan. 23 slaying of Jamar Gardner. Gardner, 30, was gunned down after a fight outside the Sycamore Meadow Apartments in the MacArthur Boulevard neighborhood.

Hunter, the alleged gunman, is charged with open murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The 27-year-old remains at the Washtenaw County Jail without bond.

Covington, 18, is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and remains in custody on $100,000 bond. Records show he will be represented by the Julington Litigation Center, which provides legal services for indigent juveniles.

Pittman, Covington’s 35-year-old mother, is charged with felonious assault. Her $100,000 bond was reduced to $10,000, 10 percent during last week’s hearing.

Why do people waive their rights all the time? You are "alleged" to have committed a crime. Never waive anything. When you waive your rights to a speedy trial or a prelim, you need to know exactly what you are waiving. You could be waving away your rights if you are not guilty
