Michigan fans say traffic backups no worse than usual

Michigan fans pack the gates as they enter Michigan Stadium, but several said the congestion on the roads was less than they expected coming into town.

Michigan football fans had two challenges facing them today: Coping with the heat and the possibility of worse-than-usual traffic backups due to a reduced traffic control plan between the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan.

As game time approached today, fans appeared to be having no more difficulty than usual in getting into Ann Arbor and to the game.

In the hours before the 3:30 p.m. kickoff, traffic seemed to be moving fairly smoothly in and around Ann Arbor.

Lynn Niniowsky approached Ann Arbor from the east on I-94.

"(I-94) was backing up but (US-23) north was fine," she said. "We took Washtenaw to Stadium and traffic was really moving. It was like a regular day. I was surprised that it wasn't bumper-to-bumper, especially on Stadium."

Matt Hubbard left Pleasant Ridge west of Detroit at 12:30 p.m. and was parking his car down the road from the BIg House right after 1:30 p.m.

"There was an accident at 275 and M-14 that held us up, but once we got on 14 we flew in," said Hubbard. "The traffic was flowing fine on Washtenaw and Stadium. It seemed lighter than usual. Maybe because it's a later game and people got in earlier."

Charlie Mahar, who came from the Grand Rapids area, made sure to arrived early.

"We took 94 from the west, which was fine early today," said Mahar. "Once you hit Main Street, it can be a nightmare if you come to close to game time. Next week's game against Notre Dame is going to have an even bigger crowd, including Notre Dame fans and people who come just to tail gate."

Jim Frega and Chris Smart drove in from Columbus, Ohio.

"It starts getting crazy right around the stadium at 1 p.m." said Smart.

They came prepared for the high temperatures. "We've got water and Gatorade, and a tent to give us shade up to game time," said Frega.

At game time, the temperature in Ann Arbor was 93 degrees, with a heat index of 98, according to Weather Underground. A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 o'clock tonight.

Sharon Kiesel, who drove in from Jackson without any difficulty, sacrificed her vanity in preparation for 90-plus temperatures.

"Even though I had my hair done yesterday, I decided it was worth it to wear a pony tail and a baseball cap to beat the heat," she said.

Emergency medical staffers are stationed at different points inside Michigan Stadium on the lookout for fans suffering from the heat. U-M officials said water stations were set up inside the stadium to offer free water to fans. Bottled water also was available for sale.

"It's not opening day unless it's 90 degrees," said Scott Stine who brought dozens of bottles of water and several coolers to stay fortified until he entered the stadium.

As far as beating the traffic goes, Stine has the perfect solution: "We got here at 8 a.m. and we're going to stay until everybody leaves."

Of course, Michigan fans will say the traffic was not a problem. The majority of them don't live here or understand how the city of Ann Arbor has be fiscally destroyed by UM. OOPS! I said it...the city of AA has been fiscally destroyed by UM. This wonderful university has drained the city's budget by their land grab thereby destroying the taxes paid to the city. They have demanded more & more services & now can't spare $100k a year for services they've gotten for free. Just the other day a company gave $150K to organizations in the city for thanks for everything they do for their workers. What about UM? Well...they demand that streets are closed permanently, build stadiums with no restrictions to noise level for the residents that live nearby or resolution because they are controlled by UM atheletic dept., utilize our fire/police services for traffic/fireworks/night games, destroy a historical bldg. (AAHS) to build an behoment bldg. and so on. OOPS, why don't you ask UM how much money the city had to paid for work on that stadium bridge? It's incredible that the name of our city hasn't changed to UM, Mi...since we are just caving to every little whim they want without them paying a dime. I would be surprise if this is printed b/c it's apparent no one can disagree. Why don't UM just pay the bill and move on to show some community shared sacrifice better yet...start paying 50% of the tax bases you took to destroy our city.

I commend the entire big house stafffers on a great day to be a michigan fan. In the dangerous heat, they made sure each concession offered plenty of 4 dollar waters for us and kept it cold and ready. I bought two for myself and three each for my family, thank you David B. It was a deserved 75 dollars in water for our health on this great day! Go Blue!

The only traffic problem is the Stadium bridge. The same bridge that Dingell and his host liberal "dignataries" crowed about fixing last year.....when it was election time!

The traffic is going to be a problem AFTER the game, NOT before the game! People trickle in slowly beforehand, but wait until over 100,000 people are trying to leave all at the same time. This past game will NOT be a good indication of what the future will hold because of the weather. As someone who lives six or so blocks away from the Stadium, I DO NOT look forward to next weekend...

I'm confused by your comment. Were you not aware that the stadium was nearby when you decided to live at your current location? The activity next weekend will only be incrementally better or worse than other big games. It's not like they suddenly decided to start games at 2pm on Wednesdays. I live closer to the stadium than you do. Plan ahead. Stop whining.

The biggest traffic problem will be caused by the reconstruction of the Stadium bridge.

Reconstruction of the bridge will start taking place after the football season.

The traffic is rarely horrible for 3:30 games because fans trickle in for hours beforehand. Wait for a 12:30 game before making judgements.

So once again we have evidence that the City has wasted our tax dollars in years past. This seems to be proof that U of M was right in telling the City no way would they pay the City's outrageous fees. Why can't we as voters get together and hold the people in city hall accountable for wasting our tax dollars? Wait..wait...what was that?...I thought I may have just heard that the city wants to buy more art from Germany........the waste at city hall is endless.
