University of Michigan prepares for largest incoming class ever

By Tina Reed

Work is already under way to accommodate the University of Michigan's anticipated largest class ever, with 6,350 freshmen expected this fall, U-M President Mary Sue Coleman told the Board of Regents this afternoon.

U-M received nearly 31,600 applications this year. As of June 1, 15,979 of those applicants were offered admission in Ann Arbor, the university previously announced.

Coleman said the university will "make sure these students are well situated."

In June, the regents approved a $56 million facelift for the Alice C. Lloyd Hall as part of the Residential Life Initiative to modernize and improve residence halls.

But incoming freshmen also will see tuition and fee increases. In May, the regents approved a residence hall rate hike and increased tuition by 1.5 percent at the June meeting. Those increases were made in conjunction with increases to financial aid programs as part of the 2010-2011 general fund budget.

The $1.55 billion budget includes the lowest undergraduate tuition increase since 1983 with an additional $8.3 million contribution in in-house financial aid to negate the increase for in-state students. But a mid-year tuition increase is possible if the university loses some state funding.

MI-expatriate

Parents need to get smart in this economy. There are loads of out-of-state highly qualified private schools who will offer huge merit scholarships to your academically and otherwise top-notch students. Michigan is not one of them. Look outside and then decide. That is why our youngest will be starting in September at a univeristy 14 hours away. She is thrilled and so are we. $48,000 in less cost out of pocket is not to be sneezed at. That will fund plenty of flights home, and with IM & email, we will barely notice she is gone, much like having her upstairs behind her bedroom door. We just won't have to feed her, & she will learn to conquer problems on her own. College is for growth, not for convenience or even family tradition. Your kids will thank you - this is our third, I know - our first graduated from Michigan & wishes she had gone elsewhere. There is barely separation when they are only 10 minutes from home.

Agree. I will not send my freshman to U-M this fall. The class is too big.
