Man remains jailed after bank robbery in Ann Arbor

By Lee Higgins

A man was arrested Tuesday in Jackson County, roughly 30 minutes after Ann Arbor police say he robbed the Bank of America branch on Briarwood Circle, authorities said.

No one was injured in the 2:30 p.m. robbery, Ann Arbor Detective Lt. Mark St. Amour said.

According to St. Amour, the man walked into the bank wearing a bandana covering his face and a cap on his head. He demanded money from a teller, implied he had a weapon and made off with an undisclosed amount of money, St. Amour said.

Officers responded to the bank within minutes of receiving a 911 call and obtained a description from witnesses of a car that left the scene, police said. Investigators disseminated that description to other police agencies, St. Amour said.

According to the Jackson Citizen-Patriot, a Chelsea police officer spotted the car on I-94 west and followed it into Jackson County. State troopers stopped the car in Blackman Township and arrested the 33-year-old man, the Citizen-Patriot reported.

Investigators recovered the stolen money and a loaded handgun after searching the suspect's car, St. Amour said.

Jackson police, Blackman Township police and the FBI also were involved in the bust, the Citizen-Patriot reported.

The man is at the Washtenaw County Jail. Charges are pending.

The FBI does not always get involved with all bank robberies, it depends on the circumstances. For example, if they believe the robber was involved with multiple bank robberies. Other factors involved in federal involvement might be if they decide to prosecute federally or state. most of the time the FBI is involved, but not all the time. Great job by the person who called 911, without that call the robber most likely gets away.

A big thank you to the citizen(s) who got involved and gave the Police a lead....It truly takes a team of Police and public to get these criminals off the streets. Good work by all the officer's involved. Yes the FBI will respond to any bank robbery with in a few minutes. The area PD's and the FBI have a great working relationship.

WOW! And yet in previous stories, it was debated that the Chelsea Police Department didn't need a new facility, some saying they don't deal with much "real" crime.

I think jondhall's comments were made with tongue firmly pressing against cheek.

If the arrest took place within 30 minutes of the actual robbery, how was the FBI involved in the bust? The article doesn't mention them anywhere else in the article until, one is lead to read, after the fact. Seems as though the local agencies did all the work and the FBI just riding coattails.

@jondhall...if there was indeed racial profiling, can you please tell me what race the profiling was based on? Or is your statement based upon an assumption of the bank robber ethnicity?

"Officers responded to the bank within minutes of receiving a 911 call and obtained a description from witnesses of a car that left the scene, police said. "Investigators recovered the stolen money and a loaded handgun after searching the suspect's car, St. Amour said". @ Jondhall-Are we reading the same story? What part of the story implied racial profiling?

@jondhall- the article says the officer spotted the car that was described by witnesses. No profiling or speeding happened. "a Chelsea police officer spotted the car on I-94 west and followed it into Jackson County"

I wonder if he was speeding, they like to pull over speeders or was it a random stop? I hope they were not profiling him.
