Man charged in Superior Township shooting death released on bond

By Art Aisner

A second person charged in the shooting death of a Superior Township man in January has been released on a reduced bond pending trial.

LaShawn Covington’s bond was recently reduced from $100,000 to 10 percent of $10,000, court records show.

The 18-year-old Superior Township man is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon in the Jan. 23 slaying of Jamar Gardner during a fight outside the Sycamore Meadows apartment complex off MacArthur Boulevard.

Gardner, 30, died at the scene.

Marget Pittman, Covington’s mother, is also charged with one count felonious assault, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder in Gardner’s death. She was released after posting $1,000 bond on Feb. 16, court records show.

Both are scheduled to stand trial on June 7.

Larry Hunter, the alleged gunman, appeared in circuit court on Wednesday for a pre-trial conference. He remains in custody without bond.

Only in Washtenaw courts will a suspect for assault with intent to commit great bodily harm, less than murder, be released after posting $1000! And the less than murder charge is verbal gymnastics. If there are no murder charges filed, then there are no murders committed in our fair area...what a joke! And then the residents shake their heads in disbelief when the released suspects go out and do other violent acts...whoda thunkit?

TDW, One quarter of a mile to the north of me is MacArthur Blvd and Superior Township. One quarter of a mile to the west of me is the City Of Ypsilanti. MacArthur Blvd affects the quality of life in Ypsilanti and involves you directly - and you do have a say. We all have a say, we're just not saying it.

When I was a kid I played in the woods where MacArthur Blvd is today. There was a dirt path that lead from Clark Rd to a small pond we refered to as the "Lilly Pond." I used to go to the Lilly Pond and catch frogs. in the 1960s developers bulldozed the forrest, built roads and houses, and "civilized" the wilderness. It is so sad to watch what is happening to Ypsi.
