Man injured in downtown Ann Arbor drug deal knew the men who shot him, police say
A man shot in the leg during a downtown Ann Arbor drug deal Wednesday night knew the two men who tried to rob him, city police said today.
Ann Arbor Police Det. Sgt. Brian Jatczak said the suspects, ages 23 and 21, were both Ann Arbor residents. Police arrested them just after the shooting and expect they will be arraigned Friday, Jatczak said.
According to police, the shooting occurred in the 400 block of Thompson Street just before 11 p.m. Wednesday. A 42-year-old man from Ypsilanti met with the men about 10:50 p.m., planning to sell them marijuana.
Jatczak said the man began to flee when he realized he was going to be robbed and shots were then fired.
The man was taken by ambulance to the University of Michigan Hospital, but officers did not have an update on his condition Thursday.
Police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said it was not clear how many shots were fired. Detectives are investigating whether anyone else was involved, she said.
Officers from the University of Michigan public safety team responded to assist city police at the scene. Spokeswoman Diane Brown confirmed Thursday that neither the victim nor the suspects were students at U-M.

For those who still think Ann Arbor is free of crime (Ryan), no drug deals or shootings need only look back at other stories from AnnArbor.com to see it is happening and has been happening in the city and township. Did residents of Ypsilanti go on the attack when these other stories were published. No! I don't remember reading any derogatory remarks but even when the story is about an Ann Arbor crime that is committed by Ann Arbor residents someone just has to try and throw it over on Ypsilanti and say it must be our riff raff. Grow up! Crime is happening everywhere and Ann Arbor is no different than any other city. You have drug dealers, low income housing and crime. Get over yourselves.

Well, if the dude from Ypsi hadn't snuck in here and given our fine Ann Arbor boys The Reefer Madness they might not have been driven to rob him of the herb in the first place. So there's that....

If the police continue arresting violent criminals where there are clear victims of their crimes, they will find they have the support of the community. If they continue going after people for minor marijuana offenses and giving people parking tickets for parking funny in their own driveway, they won't. Good job AAPD. Hopefully they leave the victim of the shooting alone. I'd say being shot is penalty enough...

Both the suspects were from Ann Arbor? Impossible. Everyone knows that there are no criminals in A2; these guys must be from Ypsi or elsewhere. Better build a wall to keep out the riffraff, right?

Get your door kicked in and get robbed by the "riffraff" and you will feel differently, I promise. We don't need a wall, we just need a much stronger police presence to act as a deterrent. But forget that ever happening. AAPD is useless. They can't even send anyone out when someone is CLEARLY selling stolen goods on a corner in downtown A2 (in broad daylight) and they are alerted by a citizen who served it right up for them. Pathetic.
