Michigan Tech closes in on University of Michigan as state's most expensive public university

By Juliana Keeping

Correction: An earlier version of this story had an incorrect figure for Michigan Technological University's tuition that indicated it was more expensive than the University of Michigan. Based on the correct figure for MTU, U-M remains the most expensive public university in the state. The story has been revised to reflect that.

The University of Michigan is still the most expensive in-state school.

But Michigan Technological University is creeping up on the Ann Arbor school for that distinction.

Michigan’s 15 public universities have now completed setting tuition for the fall, with raises spanning from 0 percent at Eastern Michigan University to 7.4 percent at Western Michigan University, according to the Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan.

Tuition is lowest at Saginaw Valley State University at $7,307 and highest at U-M at $11,837.

The University of Michigan is the state's most expensive public university.

And although tuition is lowest at SVSU, students there will pay 5.9 more than last fall.

Tuition increases and tuition for a typical in-state undergraduate are as follows (each annual figure represents 30 credits):

1. University of Michigan Ann Arbor: 1.5% increase; $11,837
2. Michigan Technological University: 5.9% increase; $11,175
3. Michigan State University: 2.5% increase; $11,151
4. Central Michigan University: 2.07% increase, $10,380
5. Ferris State University: 4.7% increase; $9,930
6. Oakland University: 5.76% increase; $9,716
7. Western Michigan University: 6.9% increase; $9,277
8. U-M Dearborn: 3.9% increase; $9,247
9. Grand Valley State University: 5.3% increase; $9,088
10. Wayne State University: 4.4% increase; $9,020
11. Lake Superior State University: 5.79% increase; $8,764*
12. U-M Flint: 3.9% increase; $8,602
13. Eastern Michigan University: 0% increase; $8,377

I'm glad people have discovered upper case in promoting their schools. They should alsolook into fees and other costs in considering the total cost of education. I did note an improvement in syntax with my son's writing which is better than Hemingway's novelties with the language and his better use of visuals in making his arguements. MTU is fine in its way but narrowly focussed. The UM has more to offer but that costs more and A2 is a more expensive venue to live in and with, but it also has a larger alumni and more connections that way for those who are trolling for their education in that manner.

I'm not quite sure where this reporter is getting her numbers, because all public facing information from both universities states very clearly that University of Michigan - Ann Arbor is still more expensive than Michigan Tech. I don't even know where the reporter received that cost of attendance amount for MTU, because the university NEVER uses that number anywhere on their website or other published material anywhere - cited below. At Michigan Tech, for a Michigan Resident, Tuition for one academic year (two semesters) is equal to $11,175. (The article quoted $12,024 - Inaccurate) At University of Michigan Ann Arbor, for a Michigan Resident, Tuition for one academic year is equal to $11,837 (The article quoted $11,837 - Accurate) This is NOT including lab fees, room and board, etc, etc.. This battle was only about tuition.. $11,837 is greater than $11,175. I have children who graduated from both MTU and UM who received equally wonderful experiences. Both have had excellent opportunities since graduation. MTU may have a higher sticker price, but it was the better value for our family. MTU was far more generous with scholarships, had low class sizes with personal attention from professors and the living expenses were very reasonable. UM living is extremely costly, class sizes were often huge with TA's leading smaller sessions and university scholarships for academics were non-existent. I am happy that we no longer have the bills for either school!

Please don't give the UM any ideas, I've got two more years of tuition to pay for my kid!

I did get one or two apologies, and it will not happen again. This is documented on a student graduating with honors from this school. The investigation is continuing.

Why does it take an MTU instructor eight months to get a grade in, why would he say that after four years at the school a degree wasn't worth anything, and why would an instructor defy university, policy, state and federal law on mmatters of confidentiality? Why do they hire late in the summer and without training send teachers into classes without knowing how to teach or ever submit grades. People go to MTU because it is cheap. People complain on parents.net because the school, does not live up to its promises and pr. When confrontended with this administrators even thepresident respond with arrogance until confronted with a child that fell through the cracks or a professor who could not be understood, put ideology before instruction or was just too lazy. Call it creative, call it what you want, but it is not education. And it is not professional.

As this was a dubious distinction, at best, I'm sure U-M won't mind relinquishing the top spot on this particular list. At least, I hope that is the case.

Somebody better tell the U of M Board of Regents this so they can get the number one spot back. First it was basketball, then football, now tuition. What's next...?
