A 30-year-old Monroe man pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor arson charge for lighting fire to a pickup truck outside an Ann Arbor urgent care facility last month.

Fred Brooks pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge of arson of personal property valued at $200 to $1,000 in exchange for prosecutors dismissing a felony charge of arson of personal property valued at more than $1,000 but less than $20,000, court officials said. Brooks also agreed to pay full restitution for the damage.

Ann Arbor police say Brooks set the pickup on fire June 11 outside an urgent care facility near the intersection of East Stadium Boulevard and South Industrial Highway, hoping the fire would distract employees at the facility so he could attempt to commit another crime. Police didn't specify what crime he was attempting to commit.

Brooks used papers and a lighter to set fire to the pickup, which belonged to an employee at the facility, police said.

Brooks, who was evaluated at a psychiatric unit at the University of Michigan Hospital after the incident, remains free on bond pending sentencing on Aug. 27.
