More snow could move into Washtenaw County in time for evening commute

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Ready for more snow?

The National Weather Service says up to 2 inches of snow could fall this afternoon in Washtenaw and Wayne counties — just in time for the afternoon commute.

If that forecast holds true, the new snow would pile on top of 9.5 inches that came down locally between Sunday afternoon and this morning.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service say a low-pressure system is moving through the Ohio River Valley late this afternoon, spreading through southern lower Michigan in time for the evening commute.

Forecasters also are keeping an eye on a storm system making its way to the area Thursday night into Friday. It's not yet clear how strong that storm could be, but accumulation is possible, the weather service says.

People love to talk about Detroit's failures and its status as a third world city. One of the prime examples is that they do a bad job of snow removal. who is the genius responsible for not calling in snow removal crews?

A snowfall of over 9 inches, and the city doesn't have a full crew out because of the holiday. Incredible! And they wonder why the voters don't support their pet projects...

I hear the UM plows outside right now, but my spouse has had to ditch his car on the westside of town, because even in the near-downtown sections it is too deep to drive a car through. Could the city at least *warn* us not to bother leaving home if they're not planning on getting many of the main-road areas driveable at all?!

many of us wouldn't bother leaving home if the university that employs us would just close for once. U of M refuses to close and Ann Arbor refuses to plow. Us locals who work at the school are stuck, literally and figuratively.

Hello good citizens of Ann Arbor and neighboring communities. Not servicing the roads, at least in the manner you believe they should be, is good for the city & county municipalities as well as many local businesses that serve these areas. There is a formula to operate efficiently and not (over) service the roads. We don't have any money anyway (no really, we don't) so we're saving your hard earned tax dollars or the interest on loans we'd need to take to provide the additional services you request. At the same time we're also providing a big boost and boon to tire, towing, collision and auto rental businesses. You're welcome.

seriously? plow the roads!! i've lived in some snowy places and have never seen such poor response. the majority of the snow fell before dark last night and still at 2:30p today, nothing was plowed.

West Huron and Washtenaw were plowed this morning.

Great - at this rate parts of Ypsi Township will get plowed by Thursday? Why cant we get snow removed in 24 hours? Its amazing our sub is still not plowed and people cant get to work! Smaller, similar size communities in Wayne County do not have this issue - but live off Huron Rver Drive/Textile area and we are in the dark ages, waiting for snow removal for days! I read the Township is working to reduce blight - how about they work to REMOVE SNOW... you know, BASIC services???

I dare the city officials to reply to us! I dare the Ann Arbor .com to get a story from them, to get them to explain why even major streets like Dexter are still in such awful shape. Do they need to pay the University to plow for them? UM seems to manage to keep campus streets clear, and certainly whenever I want to feel less worried about getting stuck in snow or sliding around hopelessly I use as many streets close to/within the university campus as possible (so, better to stick to Fuller Road near the hospitals and North Campus streets than to try with Plymouth, and fuggedabout streets behind/near Miller, they are a total mess, never ever plowed.). Was there a problem with response for this storm, or is this just more of the same from the City?

say it plain, i'm beginning to think that epengar works for the city. @Epengar, we have contacted our city council about this for the past 15 years we've done it. excuses such as the ones you have continuously posted on this website are all we get. If there is a problem with the way our city clears snow, maybe they should try to fix it rather than come up with excuses.

I double dog dare you to treat other people with respect...and less presumption. Or do you somehow believe that commenting on a website and contacting my council rep are logically mutually exclusive activities?! Or do you work for the city lol and find my 'rant' offensive?

I dare you to actually contact your council rep rather than rant uselessly on a website.

Dear City of Ann Arbor, When will you be plowing Snyder Ave and the rest of the side streets near the stadium? Every time there is a snow storm, it seems as if our streets get forgotten about. I saw four cars, not including my own, get stuck on my street. My car is still stuck on the street, and four men pushing and shoveling couldn't get it out. This is ridiculous. What are taxes for? PLOW THE STREETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Epengar, Please don't condescendingly assume that commenters do not know what website they're commenting on. Please don't assume that commenters haven't contacted their government officials. Please note also that the city states as its 'goal' that streets --including residential ones (i.e. , not just 'main roads') be clear within 24 hours of a snowstorm of 4 inches or more. Please understand that the amount of snow we were hit with was more than twice that, and driving became near-impossible. Please understand that if delays in meeting that 'goal' should arise, citizens might expect some explanations, especially if they've also noticed a pattern of inadequate responding to snowfall in the past.

Dear Shantelle, This is not the city of Ann Arbor's website. The ".com" is a big clue. If you want someone at the city to hear what you're saying, try www.a2gov.org Here's a chart that shows the city's progress on side streets. It looks like you're concerned about Route 6. They're doing the neighborhoods with trash pickup tomorrow first. http://www.a2gov.org/government/publicservices/fieldoperations/Pages/StreetSnowPlowingStatus.aspx

Ann Arbor needs City Commissioners who are going to take public safety more seriously. Snow plowing is not the place to cut corners. Major roads like Dexter Road remain unplowed! Rather than plow the roads, the public will pay for emergency vehicles, car accident damage and possible injury or loss of life. The city is exposing itself to lawsuits...a city of this size certainly should be able to have the major roads plowed by now.

The weather predictor's really messed up this storm. They were predicting 1-2 inches of snow, and we end up with 9. Fortunately, they were wrong about the ice too, as we didn't get much of anything.

I have never seen a city as dumb as A2 is about plowing snow You DO NOT SALT first ,12" of snow. First you scrape the snow out of the way then and only then do you SALT. WOW can't believe what they do in A2 Salting first anything over 1" of snow makes about as much sence as a screen door in a submarine

The original forecast for the storm included sleet and freezing rain, and much less snow. As it turned out, the sleet was just a few miles south of us.
