Demand for hate crime charges in after-school fight is premature

By Letters to the Editor

When I read of the attack on the 16-year-old Muslim female student I was taken aback that several boys were involved in the student fight, which resulted in the girl being physically injured. The school was handling the matter though, the police were notified, and so I figured the proper authorities would get to the bottom of the disagreement and take appropriate action.

I am now more taken aback at what I consider to be an uninformed, premature, intolerant, and inappropriate public demand by The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Mr. Walid, the executive director of the Arab-American group, to implement hate crime charges before a proper investigation is completed.

The United States is a nation of tolerance, and Ann Arbor specifically is a culturally sensitive and tolerant community with the resources and the desire to educate, investigate, and enforce the laws.

I urge Mr. Walid to not try to turn an unfortunate schoolyard altercation into a reason to perpetuate cultural intolerance in one of the most culturally sensitive communities in the United States, especially without all the facts presented from a properly conducted and unbiased investigation. I would expect the CAIR to be offering their cultural expertise as an aid to the investigation and proper authorities in an organized example of tolerance, not to inflame the community with prejudicial calls to action.
