Police say alcohol appears to be a factor in crash that injured three people in Lodi Township

By Amalie Nash

Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies say alcohol appears to be a factor in a crash early Saturday in Lodi Township that critically injured one person and seriously injured two others.

Police say a fourth person also was in the vehicle, but fled before deputies arrived at the scene of the 2:50 a.m. crash on Ann Arbor-Saline Road near Wagner Road.

According to reports, a 1998 Pontiac was southbound on Ann Arbor-Saline Road when the driver lost control, and the car left the roadway and struck a tree. The two back seat passengers were ejected.

A 26-year-old Ann Arbor woman who was ejected was taken by helicopter to the University of Michigan Hospital with critical injuries, a sheriff's news release said. The other person ejected, a 25-year-old Twin Lake man, was taken to the U-M Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver, a 20-year-old woman from South Lyon, was seriously injured, police said. It's not known whether the front-seat passenger who ran from the scene was injured.

Police said alcohol is suspected as a cause in the crash, and the lack of seatbelt use appears to be a factor in the injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

I was in that accident. I was the backseat girl. I dont remember that night at all, but was told by friend what had happened. Apparently I got stuck between the front seat and the back (did not fly out of vehicle)had to get cut out of car and flown to the hospital. Had immediate surgery on my head and my right side was paralyzed. I was in a coma for 2 weeks, in the hospital for 2 months. Now only my arm is paralyzed.

This story seems like the facts are wrong- The woman who was ejected seemed very young, but that could have been her talking while being in shock. The woman who was trapped in the car was in the back passenger seat. Are they saying she flew into the back seat during the crash? and the girl on the ground was lucid and speaking to my husband and I while the girl in the car never gained consciousness or responded while we were trying to get the door open while waiting for the ambulance to get there. So she was medevac'd but only serious and the girl talking was critical? Just trying to make sense of it all, I've been haunted by this since it happened and appreciate the update but this doesn't answer anything.

The driver is only 20? Drinking age is 21 so there's other issues if alcohol was involved. I'm watching the news now doing a piece on young drivers. Car accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers. It's a sad situation there are so many unecessary accidents and deaths while vehicles are safer than ever.
