Authorities are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and/or conviction in a fire that gutted a Saline home last month.

Detective Don Lupi said investigators don't yet have any direct proof of arson, but there doesn't seem to be any other likely explanation for what caused the Oct. 9 blaze at 99 W. Henry St.

The fire was reported by a neighbor shortly after midnight, and no one was home at the time. Officers found signs of forced entry, but nothing was reported stolen, police reports said. Investigators are awaiting test results from several debris samples sent to the Michigan State Police crime lab.

Police reports indicate investigators interviewed several witnesses and re-interviewed a man who entered the house to check for people before firefighters arrived. Lupi would not comment about possible suspects and said he hopes a reward will generate some new leads.

The reward is funded by the Michigan Basic Property Insurance Association. Anyone with information is asked to call the Michigan Arson tip-line at 1-800-44-ARSON.

Anyone with information can also call the department anonymously at 734-429-7911, or e-mail Lupi at dlupi@cityofsaline.org.
