Second arsonist in Pinball Pete's case enters plea deal

By Art Aisner

The second man charged with arson in the blaze that destroyed the former Pinball Pete’s arcade in Ann Arbor last fall has pleaded guilty, court records show.

Ian MacKenzie, 18, pleaded guilty to a charge of arson of real property during a brief appearance in Washtenaw County Circuit Court last week. A jury trial was scheduled for May.

The vacant Pinball Pete's was destroyed by a fire last fall.

Prosecutors agreed to drop a charge of preparing to burn at sentencing on March 29. Court records show Circuit Judge Melinda Morris agreed to delay the sentence at that time while MacKenzie completes an in-patient drug treatment program.

MacKenzie turned himself in to authorities after police arrested accomplice Justin Arens in November. Arens, 21, pleaded no contest to arson charges and was sentenced to serve between 19 months to 10 years in prison last month.

Police said the duo were homeless and staying in the vacant building along South University Avenue when they used gasoline to start the fire. No one was hurt, but the blaze gutted the structure, which was later demolished.

It'd be nice to learn what the motive was.
