South Main Street to close during President Barack Obama's Ann Arbor visit

By Erica Hobbs

All lanes of a portion of South Main Street near Michigan Stadium will be closed during President Barack Obama’s visit to Ann Arbor next week.

The Ann Arbor City Council voted Monday night to close Main Street between Pauline and Stadium boulevards from midnight Friday, April 30 to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1.

The measure is in preparation for Obama’s commencement speech at the University of Michigan that Saturday.

The city said U-M also will be testing field lights and loud speakers at Elbel Field as early as 4 a.m. May 1 in preparation of graduation.

What a bunch of grumpy pants! The President is coming to our town. I couldn't be more excited!!! If you can, make a sign of support and put it in your window. Lord knows he could use some right now.

I hope it rains too, but not because the President is coming to town. All of you should not be surprised that the city/University is closing the road for more than half the day. This is the same college that killed a couple acres of grass to graduate on their own turf instead of accepting an invitation to use EMU's stadium. (I understand not wanting to use another school, I do. I don't understand killing the grass when the residents claim to be so eco-friendly) Try to make the most of what you can out of the day, supporter or not. If anyone should be complaining it should be the residents that live near the stadium that the visit/road closings are affecting.

I look forward to watching our magnificent President speak on television that day. I am thankful for all the positive comments concerning our wonderful President. There are so many people with negative comments but not a lot of suggestions with good solid solutions. It is so easy to play the blame game.

Mikey2u, do really believe he is the best president in 41 years? that comment alone makes you an uninformed, uneducated poster. you are right right in one respect he has done more in one year than others, like expand the debt 4x apologize for Americas greatness and bow down to world leaders. Utterly ridiculous

Seriously, did people expect anything less than some roads to be closed temporarily due to this historic event? They're only closing part of a road for 14 hours! This is in the same city where, year after year, downtown shuts down multiple roads in the heart of Ann Arbor for four days during the Art Fair. Ride a bike for half a day and save the environment. It is Tree Town after all.

When the President of the United States comes to town, roads get closed for a short time that is just the way it is. Deal with it. Barack Obama is the best President weve had in 47 years and I welcome him to Ann Arbor. Hes accomplished more in one year than most presidents accomplish in 4. I welcome him to Ann Arbor and wish him all the best in the future.

So looking forward to my trip up north next weekend. That is one thing neither one of those two have been able to ruin yet, although I am sure they are trying.

good thing people will have Stadium to travel east of Main Stre...oh wait, that's right, bridge not fixed...wouldn't it be nice if Obama brought a check to fix the bridge with him or even Jenny Girl? Ya know the sychophant will be there as well. On a different note, how will the people that live in the apts on Main across from the Stadium get in or out of their homes?

Google Maps can even highlight the stretch of road you're trying to mark: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=42.267179,-83.748479&spn=0.018134,0.018411&z=15&msid=104485271810402289280.000484af1fdfaa2d5d6ba
