Remember to spring your schedule forward with daylight saving time

The digital sign over Arborland Mall was not updated in November to reflect the correct time.

Hopefully you didn't make any plans for early Sunday morning -- it's that dreaded time of the year when we lose an hour of sleep with the changeover to daylight saving time. As usual, the actual time change goes into effect at 2 a.m. Sunday.

While that may be unfortunate news for your sleep cycle, it will get those errant clocks around us like the iconic Arborland sign over Washtenaw Avenue back on schedule.

Not a fan of the time change? Look at the bright side, spring is less than two weeks away and you'll soon be enjoying that extra hour of light on the golf course, at a Detroit Tigers game, or grilling hamburgers on your patio.

Whether or not we use it, other countries do. Sunny or not so sunny, Cuba uses it. Russia uses it year round 2 hours ahead of Standard Time, and New Zealand uses it half the year, from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April. Using SKYPE to reach people in other countries necessitates knowing the time used in that other time zone, whether we're on Daylight Saving Time ourselves or not.

Hmm , for about 1 billion years, every species on Earth lived by the rule of sun rise, sun set. Then, about the time of WW I, it was decided that industry and business would benefit by the creation of artificial management of our sleep cycle. But advocates of that kind of management knew they'd have to persuade people using other motivations like "... you'll soon be enjoying that extra hour of light on the golf course, at a Detroit Tigers game, or grilling hamburgers on your patio." Our unique form of government which is supposed to be devoted to "hands off individual freedom" now tells us what time to get up, what times to be on the job and what times we can recreate before the assigned time for sleep. The power of regimentation reaches into even the sacred space of our bedrooms. Game over.

Getting up in the dark is not my favorite activity. Having just escaped it, it is no fun to go back to it.

In addition to my other comment: it is a nuisance to change clocks, signs, ads twice a year. Some are very hard to do (Burton Tower, Arborland obviously!)

Sunrise is right around 6 am in the summer around here (Varies each day). 70 % said they don't want daylight savings time. They want the sun to rise at 5 am. Why? What are you doing at 5 am that you need the sun? Conversely, sunset in the summer is around 9 pm. 70% want the sun to set at 8 pm. Don't you enjoy late evening sunset walks, concerts in the park, chatting outdoors with friends? I don't understand.

DST used to start the 1st Sunday in April and now its the 2nd Sunday in March. For us at the end of the ETZ its too dark: kids going to school in the dark are not safe even if we do like to lounge around in the summer until 10.

Granted an hour of lost sleep has impact. And there are multiple things we all choose to stay up late for and lose that hour. Super Bowl, Oscars, NCAA tournament, St Paddy's celebration are all within reach of recent past or future. Seems to me it's one more thing Fox "news" is focusing on because they have nothing real to report.
