Two hospitalized after motorcycle crash on M-14 near Ann Arbor

By Cindy Heflin

A woman was in critical condition and a man in good condition Monday after a motorcycle crash Sunday on westbound M-14 on the northwest side of Ann Arbor.

The crash occurred just after 4 p.m. Sunday, when a 70-year-old Bronson man lost control of the 2008 Victory motorcycle he was driving west on M-14 near Wagner Road in Scio Township, Michigan State Police said in a press release.

The man and his passenger, a 65-year-old Marshall resident, were both thrown from the motorcycle, police said, and landed in the roadway.

Police said both riders were wearing helmets, and alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.

A preliminary investigation indicates the crash occurred as the driver was changing lanes. The driver crossed the fog line, went over the warning rumble strips and onto the gravel shoulder of the freeway before losing control of the bike, police said.

Huron Valley Ambulance paramedics took the injured to the University of Michigan Hospital. Scio Township firefighters also assisted at the crash scene.

Doug, a Victory looks and sounds like a Harley to most people. Are you sure you want to single out Harley riders, or are you actually upset about anyone who rides one of the many brands of Harley look-alikes or clones, including those made by Honda and Yamaha? Also, please understand that while you may find it offensive, increased noise can contribute to increased safety for a motorcyclist. There would be less incentive, If fewer people were texting and on the internet while driving. So you may find it offensive, but motorcycle and bicycle riders also find it offensive when cars run into them.

I have a problem with loud, noisy bikes. They're generally Harleys. If my car (or yours) was anywhere near that loud, I'd be arrested. Why do these douches get a free pass? Your remarks about texting, etc., while valid, have no place here and don't justify what you're defending -- disturbing the peace. And don't include bicyclists on this discussion -- I am a bicyclist -- they also have no place in this conversation. Finally, I don't like it when people hit me in my car, but if I took my mufflers off, I'd be arrested. Again, no justification for the disparate treatment.

What's with the two negative votes? Do you guys actually like it when these dirtbags "rumble" through your neighborhood and wake you out of a deep sleep or pass you on a road or fwy. so loudly that you can't even hear your own radio? I've got no problem with most riders, i.e., the ones who ride foreign bikes or, like the couple here, Victory bikes, with actual mufflers. But these Harley douches have got to go.

Got one on my street. Wakes me up every time he rides by.

Glad they're all right. Sad, though, that the wreck didn't involve some Harley-riding douche -- you know, the prototypical dirtbag with no muffler who tramps through your neighborhood or passes you on the freeway with no regard to how offensive he is. If my car was anywhere that loud, it'd be impounded. How these bozos get a free pass is anyone's guess ...

Age limits for driving cars I'm not for but what about for motorcycles ? 70 years old seems pushing it and with a passenger in back.

Paul, "lose control" is also the police report language used when a motorcyclist goes down while taking evasive action to avoid a collision, even when the motorcyclist isn't at fault.

it was my aunt involved, and age has nothing to do with it, it could have happened to any age person.

So you are against age limits on operators of vehicles that have the ability to cause great harm to others but oppose age limits on operators of vehicles that pose little threat to anyone other than the operator? Sound logic.

Thanks for the update on this story. I hope that the woman will be able to recover from her injuries. I'm so glad they both survived and also that they were wearing helmets at the time.
