University of Michigan Innocence Clinic claims 2nd victory after murder charge dropped
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office dropped a murder charge against Dwayne Provience today, saying it didn’t have sufficient evidence to retry him in a 2000 drug killing, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The Innocence Clinic at the University of Michigan, which won a new trial for Provience last year after establishing that crucial evidence had been withheld in his 2001 conviction, said it was happy with the decision, the Free Press said.
The U-M clinic is the only such clinic in Michigan that handles non-DNA cases.
Several the Innocence Clinic students who worked on the Provience case told AnnArbor.com in November that the experience sparked an interest in fighting for justice from the other side of the aisle, as prosecutors.
The clinic won its first victory in July when Wayne County Judge Patricia Fresard granted DeShawn and Marvin Reed a new trial in the 2000 shooting of Shannon Gholston. The Reeds spent eight years behind bars before being released.

Good job! Without justice there can be no freedom.
