Ypsilanti man convicted of misdemeanor for beating dog with hammer
An Ypsilanti man who beat his dog with a hammer took a plea deal after all.
Shawn Moore, 28, pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty/abandonment at a recent pre-trial hearing. He faces up to 93 days in jail on the misdemeanor charge at sentencing on Nov. 1 in district court.
Court records show he rejected a prosecutor’s initial deal in July and was scheduled to stand trial on Oct. 18. One felony count of animal cruelty/torture will be dismissed.
Ypsilanti police arrested Moore on April 1 when they responded to calls of man striking a dog in the head and body outside a residence on Green Road.
He told authorities he was disciplining the dog, which was not housebroken.
“Shadow” an 18-month-old Jack Russell Terrier mix at the time, was turned over to the Humane Society of Huron Valley and recovered.

Really? Only "up to 93 days in jail" for beating a dog with a HAMMER? Barely a slap on the wrist.

If this is all the punishment the law allows for the extreme cruelty, the law should be changed! This kind of treatment of a helpless animal, to me, is no less egregious than the beating of a helpless child. What is wrong with us?

I agree, restitution to the Humane Society, and, at least, mandatory counseling to deal with those anger issues.

Sometimes you just yearn for "an eye for an eye" punishment. I agree, that's not enough time to make up for his behavior.

Yes, I agree...that's it? Really? This person obviously has anger issues. History often repeats itself. This guy is going to take his anger out sooner or later on something or someone else. And for the poster who asked did the dog get adopted? I believe so...if we're talking about the same dog. Funny the things you hear in a checkout line. A lady in Brighton talked about the same incident and said she was the one who adopted the dog.

I wonder if the dog got re-adopted by the HSHV?

Tortures an innocent dog---and gets rewarded by getting no punishment---makes me sick.

This is not nearly enough punishment for such a heinous act. Restitution to the Humane Society for veterinarian care for this poor dog should be mandatory. I hope this man never has children. I would hate to see what he would do to a child who has an accident.
