Man shot in jaw during 2nd shooting in 2 nights

By Kyle Feldscher

An on-going feud between acquaintances resulted in a second shooting in as many nights in the Ypsilanti area, with one man being sent to the hospital after being shot in the jaw Wednesday.

Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derrick Jackson said deputies responded at 11 p.m. Wednesday to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township after a man was admitted with a gunshot wound to his jaw.

Jackson said the man didn’t call 911, but hospital personnel called deputies once he was admitted.

The shooting happened in the area of Nottingham Drive in Superior Township, just northeast of Clark Road and North Prospect, Jackson said. Two men were having a verbal disagreement before one of them pulled a gun and fired, he said.

The incident comes on the heels of a shooting in West Willow Tuesday night that put two people in the hospital, including one man in critical condition. Jackson said it’s believed at this point that the two incidents are related.

“We do believe the two shootings are related,” he said. “It’s a select group of people having a feud back and forth.”

The suspect is described as a black man, about 5-feet-5 inches tall, 140 pounds in either a newer, white Cadillac Deville or a green-colored sedan, according to deputies.

Deputies have a potential suspect and are doing further investigation, including attempting to get a warrant from a magistrate in order to make an arrest, Jackson said.

Jackson said information on the shooting from Wednesday is limited due to the victim’s injuries. Deputies are waiting for him to go through surgery and may interview him to get more information later Thursday, he said.

“Because we haven’t been able to interview the victim, we haven’t been able to get a lot of information,” Jackson said.

It’s unknown at this point how the people are known to each other or the reason for the disagreement that started the altercation, Jackson said.

Gun violence has rippled through eastern Washtenaw County this week.

A man in his early 20s was left in critical condition and a woman in her late teens were shot by someone they knew at 11:15 p.m. near Desoto Avenue and Jeff Avenue in Ypsilanti Township, according to deputies.

There was no update on their condition Thursday morning, but Jackson said both are expected to make a full recovery.

On Monday, a 23-year-old man was shot three times and found lying in the street at 9:45 p.m. near Harriet and Washington Streets in Ypsilanti. The man was shot following a dispute with two other men and was in serious condition.

Police indicated more information might be released on that incident Thursday afternoon.

All three shootings are under investigation. Monday's shooting in Ypsilanti is not believed to be related to the township shootings on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I assure you, there are good, hard working folks living in these communities! It is just sad that people are so very quick to pass judgment, when in reality , they have no clue what the neighborhood is like , only what they read in the paper.. Yes, the shootings are scary. But you can only do your best when this sadness happens . And Prey for those who were injured, and for those who decided to point a gun and pull the trigger.

Some neighborhoods have more crime than others, but even the worst neighborhoods have more good people than bad. I think it's important to remember that, even if it sounds PC.

Where is the Sheriff of Nottingham when you need him? Or, for that matter, where is Robin of Loxley?

... talk about biting the bullet! Peace

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 8:07 p.m.

We dont need cameras in west willow and MacArthur, we need security gates. Bullet proof security check ins. With airport style xray scanners. put up a wall around these communities and patrol everyone entering and leaving.

Looks like we are trying to become part of the "Greater" Detroit area.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 7:09 p.m.

The crime in Detroit is not as much the issue as is the lack of police and emergency services that make the criminals feel untouchable. Here we are fortunate to have great police departments that are capable of handling these issues.

Again hearing this go down on the police scanner, police had their hands full. I wouldn't be surprised if the West Willow incident and this one ARE connected. St. Joe does a great job calling the police in. I'm sure our great officers will continue to investigate these shootings. I can't say that I have sympathy for the victims that put themselves in this position.

Usually it is Macarthur Blvd OR West Willow. This person was able to combine both into the same activity.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 3:47 p.m.

Two out of the three shootings were technically not in the City of Ypsilanti. *Like*

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 10 p.m.

WELL that those not change michigan ave.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 3:17 p.m.

Why does the first sentence say "Ypsilanti area" but the second sentence says "Superior Township"? Why not just SAY "Superior Township". I sometimes think that if there's a shooting in Ann Arbor the article will not mention that but will say "the north side of town".

Fri, Jun 1, 2012 : 12:55 a.m.

What cracks me up is how people in Superior Township are so insistent that they don't live in Ypsilanti. Guess what, if I address your mail to Ypsilanti you will get it.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 10:37 p.m.

I do admit that we had a major rise in crime in the Broadway , Pontiac trail ,Arroowwood area but other that "the north side of town". is still kind tame.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 7:31 p.m.

FYI - If you look up Superior Township on Google Maps, you can see its boundaries.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 7:29 p.m.

Obvious, that's not true at all. Rick Snyder technically lives in Superior Township which is not Ypsi. It may have an Ann Arbor or Ypsi zip code but Superior Township is its own entity.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 7:06 p.m.

While I agree that flipping between saying Ypsilanti and Superior Township can be confusing...I believe most if not all of Superior Township is Ypsilanti.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 4:42 p.m.

What have you been living under a mushroom ? uses the word " Ypsilanti " whenever possible when it comes to crime

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 4:05 p.m.

actually Northside of Ann Arbor is last place you'll hear gun shoots....

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 2:39 p.m.

I read the title as the victim was involved in two shootings in two nights. With the hot weather, you know summer shooting season has started early.

I'm glad most violent criminals aren't marksmen.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 3:28 p.m.

That makes it harder on the bystanders, though...

Turning their gun sideways doesn't help.....

you are so right!!

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 2:16 p.m.

Am I the only one noticing all the Latin Kings tags going up in Ypsi? Do we really need to shy away from the word "Gang" at this point?

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 8:19 p.m.

@ Robert Granville- You asked for evidence, which I presented. As this case is ongoing, that evidence may or may not point to a definitive conclusion. As we both know, evidence is simply one piece of the puzzle when, properly put together, yields a correct conclusion.

Robert Granville

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 5:09 p.m.

@GoNavy... those people would be wrong a lot of the time. That's an assumption simple and plain.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 3:19 p.m.

You are right Cory, there is one behind Starbucks on Washtenaw, or was.

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 3:18 p.m.

Robert- Many would consider "gun violence" to be at least one piece of evidence of gang activity. While - as Kyle has noted - it is too early to tell, the answer clearly wasn't "no."

Kyle Feldscher

Thu, May 31, 2012 : 2:22 p.m.

Cory- I outright asked if this was gang related. Spokesman Jackson said it's too early to tell.

Where is the evidence of gang involvement in this article?
