Two candidates withdraw from Washtenaw County commission race
One week into the race for the 5th District seat on the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners, two of three Democratic candidates have withdrawn.
Rolland Sizemore Jr.
Incumbent Commissioner Rolland Sizemore Jr. is now the sole Democratic candidate on the primary ballot for the district that encompasses Augusta Township and Ypsilanti Township south of Interstate 94.
Rick Roe and Michael White withdrew their names last week, said Ed Golembiewski, chief deputy clerk and the director of elections for Washtenaw County.
"I'll run my race just like I usually do," Sizemore said.
Sizemore, 62, of Ypsilanti, said he’s served as a commissioner since 2000 and is seeking his fifth term.
"I'm glad I don't have a (primary) race, but on the other hand I still have some projects I want to continue doing," Sizemore said.
Republican challenger Richard Deitering said the candidate parting doesn't change much for his race when he faces Sizemore in November.
"I expected Mr. Sizemore to win the primary," Deitering said.
Deitering, 50, of Augusta Township, said the redistricting that shrank the county board from 11 commissioners to 9 for this election threw him into Sizemore’s domain - but isn’t worried about the change.
"I'm very comfortable with the new redistricting," he said. "I think the dynamics, at this point, are in my favor."
Their withdrawal comes as the latest update in the race for Board of Commissioners' seats, as Democratic candidate and Webster Township resident Eric Borregard was recently disqualified from running for the 1st District seat following some confusion caused by redistricting.
In the August primary, voters will now decide just one race for the Board of Commissioners on the Democratic ballot, as Andy LaBarre and Christina Montague will vie for the spot on the November ballot for the 7th District seat.

"I expected Mr. Sizemore to win the primary," Deitering said. This Deitering fellow is pretty sharp, I'm voting for him..............
