Ypsilanti's East Middle School and Chapelle Elementary School are on the chopping block under a proposal being presented to the school board tonight.
School board President David Bates confirmed the plan under consideration to balance the district's budget would close East and Chapelle.
The school board is meeting for a special session tonight and will vote on the plan next Monday.
Since January, school board members and community members have been debating possible school closures. The Ypsilanti Public Schools Alliance formed to oppose the plans, and parents have packed several community forums.
Ypsilanti is currently operating under a state-mandated deficit elimination plan that requires chopping millions of dollars from the budget over the course of the next several years.
