Big Ten preview: A look at the Wisconsin Badgers

By Pete Bigelow

A wide-open quarterback competition and a head coach under fire.

Not exactly the variables Badger fans want to hear about coming off a disappointing 7-6 season.

Will they rebound?

VIDEO: BRET BIELEMA DISCUSSES HIS TEAM'S QB COMPETITION

In the latest of our Big Ten preview series, AnnArbor.com reporters Dave Birkett and Michael Rothstein have penciled in Wisconsin for the eighth spot, but that's about all they can agree on.

The pair see Wisconsin's season unfolding very differently. One thinks they've got enough talent to reach the Outback Bowl, while the other sees the Badgers right around the .500 mark. Read their back-and-forth "For Argument's Sake," for their breakdown, as well as for Mike's best John McEnroe impression.

As for the Badgers themselves, they seem to be comfortable running the ball like they always have while the rest of the conference moves toward the spread. Their tight ends have taken on more prominent roles in the offense in recent years, and the upcoming season should be no exception, Rothstein writes.

And finally: Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema reveals a part of his past at Big Ten media day.

One dimensional teams really do not do that well on the road. WI may win most of their home game with it's power running game. I hope they are banged up a bit when we travel to Camp Randall. I would say it will be a toss up game between UM and WI. Though if UM offense is rolling late in the season, I could see us taking this road game.

Too bad for Wisky that Barry Alverez couldn't clone himself.
