Former champions team up to win mixed doubles title at Ann Arbor City Tournament

A pair of former champions teamed up to win the open flight of the mixed doubles portion of the Ann Arbor City Tournament on Sunday.

No. 1 seed Betsy Capelli and Sven Holcombe beat No. 2 seed Anju Caldwell and Chris McMican 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 in 90-degree heat at the University of Michigan’s Varsity Tennis Center.

Capelli won the open flight the last two years with her husband, Craig. Holcombe won in 2009 with Marijana Adzic.

The single-elimination tournament is the first of four tournaments organized by the Ann Arbor Area Community Tennis Association. The men’s and women’s singles tournaments will be played July 11-15, men’s and women’s doubles tournaments on July 27-29 and a junior tournament on July 26 and July 29.

Capelli and Holcombe were among three No. 1 seeds that won their flights at the annual tournament.

Christina Rodriguez and Brian Conrady beat Carol Diephuis and Fode Camara 6-2, 6-4 for the 9.0 division title and Yunju Lee and Michael Yi defeated Kam and Rich Chicoine 6-4, 6-3 in the 8.0 division final. The Chiciones were the No. 15 seed.

No. 4 seed Patty and Mike Ferguson beat No. 2 Marie and Tim Slottow 6-2, 6-1 in in the 7.0 division, which had a tournament-high 22 teams.

In the 6.0 division final, No. 10 seed Yoonkyung Cha and Beom-chan Lee beat Donghee Chang and Justin Kang 6-4, 7-6.
