The Capellis defend their title and other results from the Ann Arbor city mixed doubles tennis tournament

By Bob Gross

Deep into a tight third set of their Ann Arbor City Tournament final, Anju Caldwell of Saline and Chris McMican of Dearborn stood at the baseline briefly discussing strategy.

On the other side of the net, defending mixed doubles open division champions Betsey and Craig Capelli lightly bounced in place, awaiting another big Caldwell serve.

In front of a small crowd at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center, the foursome, who all play out of the Chippewa Club, were putting on an impressive display -- but you wouldn’t know it by looking at the daughters of Caldwell and the Capellis, who lounged on the court-side grass eating popsicles and engaging in general kids-at-a-sporting-event behavior.

What the distracted daughters may or may not have witnessed was a well-crafted comeback by the savvy Capellis, who are now back-to-back open division champs after prevailing 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

“We were just hoping to win a game.” Craig Capelli said of their approach after being dominated in the first set.

The Capellis dug in and played their low error, high-percentage, counter-punching game; turning McMican and Caldwell’s considerable power against them and forcing an increasing amount of errors.

MORE FINALS RESULTS

9.0 Division: Kip Andringa and Linda Grosh beat last year’s 8.0 champs, Brian Conrady and Crissy Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-1. Grosh was runner-up in last year’s 9.0 final playing with Jon Bowdler. This year Grosh opted to play with fellow Chippewa Club member and USTA teammate Andringa. The pair only lost three games en route to their first city championship.

8.0 Division: Leon Wyre and Ritsuko Nakano beat Ann-Marie Kim and Virender Sandhu 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Nakano and Wyrel got their fair share of court time, winning both of their Sunday matches in extended three-set bouts. Wyrel, a Michigan alumnus, and Nakano play out of Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.

7.0 Division: Sarah Lee and Mike Shen, who won last year's tournament at 6.0, lost their bid for a 7.0 title to Joan Delany of Ferndale and Matt Hook of Ann Arbor. Hook and Delany met playing tennis and have known each other for more than 20 years. This was their first time playing together in the city tournament.

6.0 Division: Misha and Scott Moore of Chelsea battled back from a doughnut set to beat Susan and Karl Schultz 0-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Century Division: Kathy and Leo Legatski beat Linda and Bill Woodland 7-5, 7-5. After winning two long sets, the Legatskis quickly got back to helping run the tournament.
