Huron field hockey player Anna Masini and Pioneer tennis player Garrett Halpert

By Matt Durr

This week's "Athletes to Know" features Huron senior field hockey player Anna Masini -- who will soon be the third Masini sister playing field hockey in the Ivy League -- and Pioneer senior tennis player Garrett Halpert.

ANNA MASINI

Anna Masini

Grade: Senior.

School: Huron.

Sport: Field hockey.

Accomplishment: A two-year captain on the defending state champion River Rats, Masini has helped her team get off to a 3-0 start. She scored a goal in Huron's 7-0 win over Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett last Thursday. Masini was also a key member of Huron's Division 1 state runner-up track, winning three all-state medals after running legs on the state champion 3,200-meter relay team, the second-place 1,600 relay team and third-place 800 meter relay.

Favorite athletes: Her sisters, Kit (a senior on Brown University's field hockey team) and Lisa (a junior on the Dartmouth field hockey team).

Favorite music: Country music, particularly Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban.

Future plans: Committed to Brown, where she will become the third Masini sister to play college field hockey in the Ivy League.

Greatest on-field achievement: Winning the state championship last year after defeating Pioneer. “Beating Pioneer was a great accomplishment. They’re such a great program,” Masini said.

Coach Tia Sutton says: "Anna has been very instrumental the last two years. She is a wonderful player, but also as a leader she has been great."

GARRETT HALPERT

Garrett Halpert

Grade: Senior.

School: Pioneer.

Sport: Tennis.

Accomplishment: The No. 1 singles player for Pioneer, Halpert won his match Monday against Skyline in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. This after a rough start to the season where he had to retire early in two matches. He was runner-up in the open division of the Ann Arbor City Tennis Tournament in July.

Favorite athlete: Rafael Nadal. Halpert said he enjoys watching Nadal play and respects that you never hear bad things about him in the media.

Favorite music: Frank Ocean and Ben Folds stand out, but Halpert likes a variety of musical styles.

Future plans: Halpert is not looking at schools for tennis, but for academics. He plans to pursue a degree in psychology, business or economics.

A people person: “I’m a really social guy, I like to interact with people,” Halpert said.

Garrett has always been a true gentleman, both on and off the court. I remember him being "hooked" by an opposing tennis player several times and he stayed a gentleman, never losing his composure. Even though he lost the match, he won in life. Good luck in your future, Garrett.
