Since scoring just 45 points and losing its season opener, Huron has scored an average of 76.5 points in winning its next two games. Twelve players scored for the River Rats (2-1) in their win over Bellville on Friday, led by Yontae Jackson with 10 points.

"We'll be able to score," Huron coach Waleed Samaha said. "We struggled to put the ball in the basket the first game, but then we've gotten it going. We have good defensive pressure and we can take care of the ball. We pride ourselves on moving the ball and finding the open man."

One of the reasons why Samaha is confident his team will score is defense.

"Our defensive pressure for two games in a row now we've been able to asert ourselves and that's led to easy baskets," he said.

Dexter made 6 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter free throws to help fend off Ypsilanti Willow Run late. Dexter led 31-21 going into the final eight minutes, then used the free throws to clinch the win.

"Based on what I have seen, I think we are a good free throw shooting team, but we need to be more aggressive," said Dexter coach Randy Swoverland. "It's just the second time all year we've shot more free throws than our opponents. But this is a step in the right direction."

Derek Seidl led Dexter (2-3) with 18 points. Jermayne Nathan led Willow Run (0-5) with 10 points.

Dexter led 24-16 at the half.

"It was a closely played first half," Swoverland said. "We had a lot of good looks and only turned the ball over three times."

Whitmore Lake 72, Manchester 60

Dylan St. Charles led Whitmore Lake with 14 points and had five steals. Rory Judge scored nine points, and Gunner McGibbon had eight rebounds.

Manchester’s Matt Kemner scored 20 points, and teammate Jacob Korican had 12 points, including his three three-point shots he made.

“As long as you’re always playing like you’re down eight points, it doesn’t matter what the score is, and the fans recognize that type of effort,” Whitmore Lake coach Casey Livingston said.

Whitmore Lake entered the second half up just 27-26, but a 24-9 third quarter helped the Trojans (1-4) get their first win of the season.

Manchester (0-4) is coached by former Whitmore Lake head coach, Dave Arnold.
