Huron water polo player Kelcy Barott and Huron lacrosse goalie Joe Fingerle

By Pete Cunningham

This week's Athletes to Know features a pair of senior classmates at Huron High School Kelcy Barott and Joe Fingerle.

Barott has been scoring goals left, right and center for the veteran River Rats water polo team, which is primed for a run at the state title. Fingerle has been tasked with stopping goals and leading a young Huron lacrosse team.

School: Huron.

Class: Senior.

Sport: Water polo.

Accomplishment: Scored 15 goals and had seven assists in three games leading the River Rats to the Michigan Water Polo Association District 5 & 6 title last weekend. In 26 games played, Barott has scored 110 goals on 151 shots (72.8 percent conversion rate) this season and has 45 assists in

Favorite athlete: NBA legend Magic Johnson, not just for his ability as a player, but Barott said because of his strength through adversity in his battle with HIV.

Favorite music: Barott likes hip hop and R&B, particularly Big Sean and Wiz Khalifa, but said she likes a variety of genres.

First love: Barott says her favorite sport is and will always be basketball. The 6-foot tall center was a member of the AnnArbor.com Dream Team and was known to battle down low, or step outside for the occasional 3-pointer.

Next year: Will play water polo at Division I Colorado State University on scholarship. She plans on becoming an occupational therapist.

Coach Evan Koorhan says: “This year every timeout, ever score break, every time there is an opportunity for her to speak up, she always just seems to have the right thing to say. Even in the games we were under a lot of turmoil and distress she’s found a way to make herself heard, and the team feeds off of that.”

JOSEPH FINGERLE

School: Huron.

Class: Senior.

Sport: Lacrosse.

Accomplishment: The senior goalie has helped the young River Rats to an 8-7 record so far this season. Fingerle had 13 saves in a 7-5 win over South Lyon earlier in the year and has a 53 percent save rate this season.

Favorite athlete: Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge.

Favorite music: Rap, rock and dubstep (a type of electronic music). Enjoys the groups Bassnectar and Ratatat.

Next year: Will attend the University of Michigan and is undecided whether he’ll try out for the club lacrosse team.

Brace/baby face: People are surprised when they learn that Fingerle is a senior because of his full set of braces on his top and bottom teeth. “Having braces as a senior isn’t very cool,” Fingerle says.

Coach Joe Koengeter says: “The South Lyon game where we won that game, he absolutely stood on his head that game…He’s taken a lot of crucial shots and made some big saves to keep us in a lot of games.”
