Saline High School senior Cheyenne Long reached the semifinals of the Division 1 MHSAA singles bowling championships on Saturday before being eliminated by eventual champion Sarah Lokker of New Baltimore Anchor Bay.

Long was the top scorer after the morning qualifying block at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek, leading a group of 16 bowlers into match play competition, which is scored by two-game total pinfall.

She beat Allison Pace of Southgate Anderson 382-354 in the round of 16 and Jessica Vandelinder of Warren Cousino 373-361 in the quarterfinals. Lokker, who went on to beat Alex Mollitor of Holt in the final, outscored Long 471-365 in one semifinal.

Long’s six-game qualifying score of 1,346 pins was 68 better than second-place Mollitor.

Father Gabriel Richard’s Michael Goike reached the round of 16 at the Division 3 finals at Airport Lanes in Jackson. After finishing third in the qualifying round, Goike lost 390-377 to No. 14-seed Jalen White of Lansing Catholic Central.

Back at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek, Huron’s Devon Micou just missed advancing from the Division 1 boys qualifying block, losing a 16th-place tie-breaker to Nick Zambelli of Utica. Zambelli beat Micou 243-178 in a one-game bowl-off.

The Division 1 girls qualifying block also went to a bowl-off, where Pace beat Nicole Rogers of Holt. The two bowl-offs in the same location are the first two in the seven-year history of the MHSAA bowling championships.

Also in Division 1 boys, Saline’s Aaron Ohl was 27th and Pioneer’s Mike Harrington 54th in the qualifying block.

None of the three Washtenaw County participants at the Division 2 finals played at Super Bowl in Canton advanced from the qualifying round. In boys play, Skyline’s Justin Hazel was 47th and Milan’s Colten Philipi 53rd. Milan’s Brittannie Divert was 47th in the girls qualifying.

The state team finals were held on Friday.
