Skyline, Lincoln go from winless in 2010 to unbeaten after Week 1
There were three high school football programs in Washtenaw County that suffered through a winless season in 2010. One week into 2011, two of them are undefeated.
Skyline earned the first varsity win in school history by holding off Hartland for a 28-25 win Friday and Lincoln won in dominant fashion, beating Belleville 27-0.

“I’m really proud of them,” said Hutchison. “Looks like (the coaches) are doing a great job with them, like I Ieft them in good hands. So I appreciate that and I’m proud of all of them.”
For Lincoln, the win ended more than one streak. The shutout was the Railsplitters’ first in a decade -- their last coming in a 35-0 victory over Dexter in 2001 -- and just their second win in a season opener in 13 years.
A common theme for both of these teams: Experience. Skyline boasts 28 seniors (up from zero a year ago) and Lincoln has 26.
The other winless program from last season, Whitmore Lake, lost to Stockbridge 33-22 Friday night. That score was a vast improvement over its 75-8 loss to Stockbridge in last year’s season opener.
Nervous kicker
Manchester’s Tyler Stennett was nervous about a 25-yard, third quarter field goal attempt during Thursday’s game against rival Clinton. At the time, his team was trailing 14-13 and he had already had an unsuccessful extra point in the first half. But, there were positives to his nervousness, such as memory loss.
“(The failed extra point) wasn’t it my mind at all. I actually forgot about it until now,” Stennett said after the game. “I was a little scared out there, but you gotta kick it through.”
Stennett’s kick was good and Manchester went on to a 29-14 win.
A new era
No doubt Friday was a special night for first-year Milan coach Jesse Hoskins, who took over for mentor and former coach Steve Robb.
Even though the night didn’t turn out as Hoskins would have scripted it, Milan lost 22-0 to Ypsilanti, he was excited to be on the field.
“We’ve put in so much work this year, and the coaching staff has worked so hard, that when the moment finally got here tonight, it felt natural,” Hoskins said. “Tonight was the best I’ve felt in a while. We were prepared, we just didn’t execute well.”
Hoskins has said he doesn’t plan too many radical changes, but gave a nod to the legacy his former coach created with his postgame comments about his defense.
“We’ve got a Milan defense,” he said. “They’re aggressive and they hit. I’m excited about our defense.”

Way to go Lincoln! They stayed strong the whole game against a very aggressive Belleville team and gave our new superintendant a great welcome. Can't wait to be on the sidelines this week. The Freshmen and JV teams won also fo r a sweep on Belleville!
