Is Texas Longhorns' 24-hour network bad for NCAA?; Michigan men's basketball team aiming to fix flaws and more

By Kaleb Roedel

Do the Texas Longhorns set a bad precedent with their 24-hour sports cable network deal with ESPN?

Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press thinks this isn't good for the NCAA.

Sharp writes, "It's basically a paid commercial for the school.Texas already enjoyed a tremendous recruiting advantages over its neighbors, especially in football and basketball. But does 24 hours of "Hook 'Em Horns" constitute an unfair recruiting advantage?"

Adam Rittenberg: " the league [Big Ten] should continue to examine how it's viewed nationally and how it can improve its image." I guess winning bowl games is not a priority, so the Big Ten should work on its "image". Seems like a cart before the horse approach to me.

Dusty, I can just because you wrote, "you can't possibly be defending Drew Sharp!" Just like some of those out there missing the "dearly" departed. It makes no sense but there they are defending the indefensible. At lease Mr. Sharp still has a job related to this website and Michigan sports in general.

Theo212 "Michigan would also have gotten their own 24-h network with all of the Crystal we were going to win. For you youngsters, enjoy the rebuilding. For ol' Theo, Crystal only passes before my eyes... I'll never fully understand why the majority of you ran Our King out." Denial is a very powerful thing Theo. I'm surprised you didn't know that a cable network was willing to give RR a show, but DB nixed the deal. It would have been on the Comedy Network.

@Brian Let's see. tater attacked Mr. Sharp with "dullisms" and t212 still pines for his "leader" and I, gracefully, tried to explain the "majority" that ran off the WCiMFH was just one guy, DB. That cause P N LK to extrapolate that the many who didn't see enough improvement during the last 3 years will run over the new coach BH, due to not being patient. So it was tater, to t212, then Blu n Tpa, the response by P N Lk, someone being mean, mean again, then back to t212. Brian, if there was a fire in furniture store in Moose Jaw, tater, t212, the lake guy would get around to blaming D21, 1st Down, the Ghost, Mick and me for starting it by picking on and getting fired the WCiMFH. Why do you ask? TiM Go Blue!

So how does an article about a Texas 24 hour channel morph so quickly into a BH vs. RR debate? I'm guessing that if successful, other colleges, including UM will also create their own channels.

The way I feel about Brady Hoke, re: Blu n Tpa's comments...I basically agree. Brady Hoke can't get away with 3-9, 5-7, 7-6, blowouts in year 3 against the better teams, deplorable defense and special teams, lacking enthusiasm for rivalry games, the only rivalry wins are beating a mediocre Notre Dame team and just otherwise demonstrating a lack of understanding of Michigan culture/fans/rivalries. If this is what his tenure is looking like in year 3, he will be tossed out the door, too--the majority of us here will whine about him as we did about RR, "Michigan Man" or not. But by coming into Michigan, focusing on defensive recruits, realizing we need a kicker something awful and getting one, talking about toughness/accountability/running the ball with someone OTHER THAN Denard, planning to tailor the offense to our current strengths, flatout saying Ohio State is the most important game on the schedule and some of the other comments he's made, he's lightyears ahead of RR already. These things--not necessarily being a "Michigan Man"--are why a lot of us believe in him already and appear to be giving him more of a chance than we ever gave RR. A lot of Michigan fans did not care for the Hoke hire initially, but only after seeing what this dude has had to say...THAT'S what brought people around. He has been speaking the Michigan language, plain and simple. The past three years were foreign.

Re: the article on Dave Brandon answering critics...the point clearly, at least with this last hire, was not how much Michigan is or isn't willing to pay coaches or assistants. Um, to break it down in Dave-speak: Fact: Brady Hoke and Greg Mattison wanted to be at Michigan, and Brady so much so that he didn't even inquire about salary before accepting the position. Fact: Jim Harbaugh, Les Miles, Pat Fitzgerald and others did not want to be at Michigan. All three were reportedly offered more to come to Michigan than they were making at their respective programs.

Uh, who "reported" that Pat Fitzgerald, Harbaugh, and Miles were offered the job at Michigan? As far as I recall, only the LSU AD said Miles was made an offer (two, actually), and he later reworded it to say "I *believe* he was offered X", meaning he made it up. Nobody was offered any money before Hoke.

PotageLk, you sir have even more wisdom than I!! (Didn't think that was possible). You, as usual, are 100% correct. The same "fans" will be turning on BH that turned on Our King. Listen to the take Of Portage Lake. Wisdom unmatched, No lies he'll make.

You can't be serious! If BH has the same record after three years, including no defense and invisible special teams, and his teams play the last three games of the season like the WCiMFH team did, he's gone too. But I will grant you a point.. If BH comes in and splits the fan base in the first few months, ignores traditions that date back decades and loses games like never before, then you're right. Only one person was responsible for firing the last coach. The LAST coach!

Ah, it's great to be an American for instance there are many that disliked RR but then again, there were many that liked RR. How history repeats itself, there are many that dislike Brady Hoke as there are many that like Brady. Funny thing is, Brady is bringing back the same old style which was rejected for a time and now the same folks are accepting it. I wonder how long before those same folks reject it again. If Brady loses to Ohio State many won't see it as Brady's first loss but rather another loss of many to Ohio State by Mich. Ya, Brady Hoke has got to win big and fast only problem is now you've got another problem called Nebraska. Mich. fans should have high expectations but with a realistic point of view. Not giving a coach at least 5 years is unrealistic to say the least. I was expecting a 5 yr. window for RR to be successful and I am giving Brady Hoke at least 5 years to. I'll lay even odds that in the near future when many fans turn on Brady if he is not successful fast enough that I wll still be giving him a fair amount of time to be successful at Mich.

"those folks used a slow start as leverage. " Portage, a slow start is 3-9 & 2-6 BT in the 1st year (actually that is the worst start in the history of UM). 15-22 and 6-18 BT, NCAA violations, and the worst bowl loss in histroy = an abomination at UM. This is Michigan Portage !

Brandon KNEW whatshisname was going to be successful but thought it more important to placate disgruntled fans than to have a successful football program. The Kool Aid Krowd never gives up, does it? No, RR was run out by the people that never did want him here those folks used a slow start as leverage. Brady Hoke will get the benefit of the doubt for an inevitable slow start but he better be able to handle Nebraska and ohio state by year 2.

Gee: it is'nt "cool" to attack Michigan anymore, so Drew Dull goes after Texas now. I'm sure he's going to get even more clicks than he already does for this one. Dull is beginning to take his three or four one-minute segments a year on ESPN a little too seriously. It's really too bad. Before he decided he was better than the stories he covered, Drew Sharp was a good writer. His transformation into Drew Dull is sorta sad. You would think someone with a career most of us would chew ground glass for would be a bit happier about it. Maybe he needs to be assigned to the News with the hopes that Wojo and Foster will make him understand that he has a pretty nice gig if he doesn't go late-stage Lenny Bruce on it.
