Meandering through the maize (and blue): Media day coverage

By Dave Birkett

The talk of Sunday - and the headlines today - center around Michigan football media day. Along with our own coverage here at AnnArbor.com, here’s a sampling of other stories across the Web:

• Defensive tackle William Campbell has dropped 37 pounds since coming to campus in January.

• Freshmen quarterbacks Denard Robinson and Tate Forcier are like "brothers," Robinson said.

• Is Rich Rodriguez deflecting criticism by pointing out how little he inherited from Lloyd Carr last year? David Mayo thinks that might be the case.

• Kind of, sort of Michigan related. Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit said he hasn't "focused one second on" his opening-game opponent's defense. The clip is about five minutes in.

And from the non-Michigan department:

• Ohio State's offensive line isn't as bad as it's appeared at times this fall.

• Iowa's heralded 2005 recruiting class has failed to live up to expectations.

• Minnesota's offense is much more complex under new coordinator Jedd Fisch.

RR has been very charitable to Carr. If he said he inherited a great team last year, the same people who accuse him of blaming Carr now would accuse him of being "dishonest." All of those "returning starters on defense" were involoved in the two worst back-to-back debacles in UM history: Appy State and Oregon. They obviously had no QB who had any business taking snaps for a major college program. The OL was young and undersized. Carr might have gotten this team to be 6-6 through familiarity and conservatism, but the program wouldn't be as for along its way to being of national championship caliber is it is now. 3-9 compared to 6-6 was worth it if RR brings the NC to UM within a couple of years. Even beating USC in the Rose Bowl for a change would make last year utterly worthwhile.
