Michigan regents approve fireworks show for Big Chill at The Big House

By Jeff Arnold

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon always planned to make The Big Chill At the Big House a big production.

So like any festive occasion, Brandon figured the festivities should include fireworks.

The Michigan Board of Regents approved having Manchester-based ACE Pyro produce close proximity fireworks displays for the Dec. 11 outdoor hockey game between Michigan and Michigan State, which is expected to shatter the existing world record for hockey game attendance.

The fireworks will be similar to those used at professional sporting events played in arenas.

"The fireworks display provides a special opportunity to enhance the fan experience at this historic event," Brandon said in a statement issued Friday. "We are looking to make this a memorable experience for everyone in attendance at The Big Chill at the Big House."

As AnnArbor.com reported Monday, fireworks will be used during pre-game play introductions and after Michigan goals during the game. ACE Pyro will also produce a 10-minute post-game show that will be choreographed to music.

Manchester-based ACE Pyro will produce fireworks displays before and during the Big Chill at the Big House. The event will conclude with a 10-minute display.

The game, which is sold out, is expected to draw more than 109,000 fans. The crowd exceeds the current world record of 77,803 set earlier this year when Germany beat the United States, 2-1, inside the domed Veltins Arena in the opening game of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship.

The Cold War game, played in 2001 at Spartan Stadium, drew 77,544 when the Wolverines and Spartans skated to a 3-3 tie. Rink construction will begin Sunday at Michigan Stadium, leading up to Dec. 4 when Adrian College and Concordia (Wis.) will open a slate of 26 that concludes a week later with the Big Chill game.

The week will wrap up with a public skate on Dec. 12.
