Senators Charles Grassley and Tom Harkin of Iowa have asked Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany for information regarding the conference's expansion plans and financial position, according to a story in today's Des Moines Register.

Grassley is the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, which oversees tax-exempt organizations. His request raises the possibility Congress will examine conference realignment in college sports.

In other NCAA realignment news, Oklahoma president David Boren said the Sooners were well-positioned in the event of a Big 12 blow-up: the SEC had invited OU and Texas A&M to join.

Here's what else is going on in college sports today:

Once again we see our elected "officials" wasting our tax dollars worrying about athletics. The congress had NO business sticking their noses into steroids and baseball. Last year they were worried if the college championship playoffs were fair. Now they want to investigate the conferences' expansion? We have the NCAA for that. I don't pay this politicians to oversee sports. They are getting paid though to protect our country, our legal citizens, and the infracstructure of the United States, and many more national issues. Which all of those things are way more important than school yard sports. Apparantly there ain't much going on in Iowa these days.

Oops! Unless there's been a major party realignment, Tom Harkin is still a Democrat, not a Republican.
