Amani Toomer and Drew Henson headed to broadcasting boot camp

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Former Michigan football players Amani Toomer and Drew Henson are among 16 NFL veterans taking part in the fifth annual NFL Broadcast Boot Camp.

The program, held June 20-23 at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel, N.J., is led by instructors from each of the NFL’s broadcast partners - CBS, ESPN, FOX, NBC, NFL Network, SiriusXM Radio, Westwood One Radio, plus local radio and TV.

In the past three years the camp has been held, 36 of 90 participants landed broadcasting jobs, according to the NFL's Labor Policy and Player Engagement department.

Both former Michigan players have some broadcasting experience. Henson was a color analyst for ESPN3.com while Toomer did some work with the Big Ten Network and also contributed to a New York Giants post-game show.

Toomer told AnnArbor.com in May that he has a different understanding of the media now that he’s analyzing games instead of playing them.

“When I was playing, it was like ‘Oh, man, they don’t know what they are talking about, these people in the media,’” Toomer said. “But they really have a perspective that we don’t have as players, and now I’m getting my eyes open to that new perspective of the game.”

Former Michigan State quarterback Tony Banks will also participate, as will retired NFL players Anthony Becht, LeCharles Bentley, Rocky Boiman, Barrett Brooks, Rob Davis, Nick Ferguson, John Fina, Dustin Fox, Antonio Freeman, Dan Klecko, Caleb Miller, Tony Stewart and Maurice Williams.

Toomer and Henson? What about average kids like myself, who just want to make a career out of broadcasting? All of these former millionaires are stealing the gigs.

Amani Toomer will do okay...but Henson will just end up ditching the NFL broadcasting boot camp for the MLB one, not do well, and then try to make an NFL broadcasting comeback.
