Michigan State will wear Pro Combat football uniforms against Michigan

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Notre Dame and Michigan football teams have their legacy uniforms for a Sept. 10 game at Michigan Stadium.

Now, Michigan State announced it will wear special uniforms when it hosts the Wolverines on Oct. 15.

Ohio State wore Nike Pro Combat uniforms (like this one sported by Daniel Herron) in games against Michigan each of the past two seasons. This year, Michigan State will wear the special uniforms against the Wolverines.

The Spartans are one of nine teams selected to wear Nike Pro Combat uniforms during the 2011 season. The uniforms have not been unveiled, but a press release says Nike worked with each university "to bring relevant elements of the school's rich heritage into a distinguished, modern uniform design."

"Our student-athletes are very excited about being involved in this unique experience," Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said. "Nike has done a remarkable job of creating a uniform that clearly speaks to the Spartan football tradition with a modern-day look and feel."

Ohio State -- another of the nine schools that will wear the special uniform line this season -- wore Pro Combat uniforms in each of its last two games against Michigan.

This year, the Buckeyes will wear them in an 8 p.m. home game against Wisconsin on Oct. 29.

The other teams that will wear the Pro Combat uniforms include Army, Boise State, Georgia, LSU, Navy, Oregon and Stanford.

The legacy uniforms that Notre Dame and Michigan will wear on Sept. 10 were designed by Adidas.

Looks like Nike Pro Combat refers to Deflex foam to minimize the effects of impact, Dri-Fit fabric to control moisture, and Compression fit to lock in equipment. Not what the elements of this article suggested Pro Combat to be. Was this a Press Release by Nike made into a story?

Michigan fans, I got a Bogie at 12 o'clock and he's flying in restricted air space, he's shooting blanks and sounds pathetic and lost, he should go home before he gets absorbed into the Wolverine empire..

A2D2-No way little brother scores 10 points this year. The D will shut them out and shut them up. This is going to be a fun season. All of the pieces are there. There is not one game on the schedule that we can't win, and with proper motivation and focus we could win them all.

Simmer down everyone. When Michigan gets a program again, Nike will be buggging you guys. Until then, wolverine fans are going to have deal "grandpas" addidas shoes, and all that entails. LOL! Oh by the way, I saw the "throwback" jerseys for the notre dame game. I heard they were designed by two world renowned fashion designers......Ronald McDonald, and The house of Hamburgler. LOL!

Special uniform suggestions: THE Ohio State University: Barcodes. Easier to sell. Sparty: orange jumpsuits. That way, they can wear their keepsakes after the season is over, too. Notre Dame: Cherry red. In honor of their tradition of cherry-picking the Big Ten for their schedule. Michigan: None. Whatever happened to the "tradition" that David Brandon likes to shove in people's faces while he goes against every tradition the school has ever had?

Three things strike me about this: 1. If they are like the school in Ohio's uniforms from last year, they will be butt-ugly. 2. When will dantonio ever have an original thought? If the school in ohio does, then he is sure to follow. 3. Gimmick, gimmick, gimmick. . and by the way, you heard it here first: Michigan 24, michigan state 10.

So the inmates at Michigan State Prison are going to wear the same kind of uniforms as the inmates at Ohio State Prison? What a fascinating (yawn) development. "Combat Pro" - ?? Well at least that's appropriate for (1) prison inmates and (2) for Nike's effort to make up for its losing contracts with REAL university sports teams. It's kinda like kids saying, "Hey lets dress up like cowboys so we can be like REAL cowboys." Imaginative thinking often stumbles over reality. Maybe if their new uniforms catch on, the Spartans might become: the "Sport Tones." A real fashion statement - Yeah! RE: Michigan and Notre Dame going with the retro look for their September 10th matchup: Those uniforms don't look like the originals they're supposed to imitate. Dave Brandon and Brady Hoke have (finally) flubbed one - I'm just hoping that's their first AND last "great idea that isn't."

Reading the link in the article, it seems possible that these uniforms might NOT be camouflage like OSU wore in its spring game. If so, I retract my above comment. Question for A2.com: what's the use of reading your "articles" if I need to go somewhere else to be fully informed. You folks need to decide whether or not you are a news organization or something more like the Huffington RePost (as Stephen Colbert correctly calls it). Good Night and Good Luck

Sorry--but there are too many impostors who wear the uniform and who garner accolades they do not earn thereby. The uniform is meant to be worn by those who have earned the privilege to wear it--not by a bunch of wannabees. And that said, Nike's calling these "combat"--whatever their pattern--is a bit much. We are in three wars right now. THAT is combat. Douglas MacArthur called intercollegiate athletics "the field of friendly strife." And that is what it is. It is NOT combat. Good Night and Good Luck

It appears "Pro-Combat" is a Nike brand category: http://www.nike.com/nikeos/p/usnikefootball/en_US/rivalries2010#landing I'm not generally a fan of Nike. Their use of the term "combat" here is, I'll agree, trivializing of real combat experienced by real soldiers. That said, I still hold that the camoflage uniforms can be worn in honor of the U.S. Military if done properly. That would include being clear the uniforms are being worn for that purpose, and having representatives of the U.S. military present in the pre-game ceremonies. To wear camoflage just to appear "tough" and "street?" No. No honor in that.

As a 25-year veteran of the US Army, I think it is disgusting that teams wear "combat uniforms". Nothing these teams do equates to what soldiers do, and the effort to draw that equivalency is disgusting. Good Night and Good Luck

The pic of OSU's "pro combat" uniform above does not look anything like a camo uniform, and I don't see any link to the military or any attempt to honor the military either. I think "Pro Combat" is just another marketing idea to sell more uniforms.

Yes, a street fight is combat. But I'm fairly certain that MSU et. al., are not hoping that we'll be thinking of the Bloods and the Crips when they wear their "combat uniforms". Only soldiers wear "combat uniforms" Well, that and, apparently, football teams who have Nike as a supplier. Good Night and Good Luck

Believe it or not, the word "combat" does not only apply to fighting related to military action. Just look it up.

I'm pretty certain they mean camo uniforms like OSU wore. Wearing the uniform worn by the military does not honor them. They have worked long and hard, and have risked their lives for the privilege of wearing those uniforms. In my not-too-humble opinion, college football teams (USMA, USNA, and USAFA excepted) have no business wearing them. What they are doing on the field IS NOT combat. It IS a game. Good Night and Good Luck

I guess I'm confused ... when they use the term "pro-combat" are they referring to a camo uniform like OSU wore at its spring game? Or is "pro-combat" just some silly Nike term to make their product sound "tough"? The camo uniforms can be worn in honor of the Army. I don't know if that was OSU's intent at the spring game, but I suspect it was part of it.

Wow ... two removed posts ... not sure what I wrote to stir someone up enough to get their posts deleted. My point is -- at some point all this chatter about throw-back uniforms, and pro-combat uniforms, and night games and mascots and such is just distracting. Improved uniforms? Sure ... compression technology and lighter weight makes perfect sense. Otherwise they'd still be wearing wool with leather pads. The *occasional* gimmick? Sure ... why not? The constant drumbeat of such things? Again ... just play the game, please.

Your comment does have historical merit, but based on that relationship of victories over time, does that mean that UofM's coaching staff are all given knee-pads to but on to beg the NCAA for forgiveness for violations? Again, not a MSU fan, but how long has it been since UofM beat MSU?

Yeah, how many wins did the maize and blue have last year? Kind of tough to talk smack when you haven't had a respectable season in 3 years. You turn things around, be my guest, but (generalization forthcoming) by using the excuse of having "one of the most lethal dual-threat quarterbacks" in the conference/country and setting many offensive records last year, you also set many records dealing with points against, yardage against, etc. Not saying you are directly speaking this, but the phrase of "mouth cutting checks that your ___ can't cash" comes to mind. That being said, an improved UofM will help the conference as a whole. But I can't wait to see you guys play Nebraska.... And no, I am not a pure MSU fan either.

I think the alternative jerseys are cool, for about a minute, then they become a distraction. I look forward to football season and being able to recognize the players on the field. OSU's alternate jerseys were especially lame.
